Bannockburn Modelling Project (aka: Jamie's first post)

Hello,

This is my first post, and my first experience with Zbrush.

My name’s Jamie and I have recently finished studying 3D. For my final project I focussed on a modelling and texturing project based on a famous moment in Scottish history at the battle of Bannockburn. I used 50% Zbrush and 50% Softimage XSI for the modelling. Here are some stills from the final result.

The background story is as follows:

On the 23rd June 1314, the first day of the battle of Bannockburn, the Scottish leader king Robert the Bruce was involved in a clash with the English knight Sir Henry de Bohun. The incident is said to have happened when a section of the English army were involved in a skirmish with the Scottish forces. Sir Henry caught sight of the Scottish king and started a glorious horseback charge with lance in hand to eliminate the Scottish leader before the main battle had even began. Bruce, caught unawares and apparently not fully dressed for battle remarkably stood his ground and waited for the advancing knight. As De Bohun thundered towards him Bruce, armed only with a hand axe, evaded the knights lance and struck an almighty killing blow embedding his axe-head in his oponent’s helm. Bruce emerged victorious and when told by his advisors that his actions were foolish and that he should have fled he is said to have only expressed regret that his axe had broken into pieces upon impact. This small triumph against the odds prove to be a symbol of the spirit of the Scots, their army emerging victorious despite being outnumbered by 3 to 1 by a better equipped force.

Welcome to the forums! Good first post. Enjoyed seeing the breakdown in your reel. Lots of action in your scene here. Some good texturing. My only crit would be to bring out more details in the muscles. The horses look a bit too smooth. You should push the muscle tension, and straining to match your strong poses.
Good stuff. Looking forward to seeing more! :+1:

Fantastic job! Lots of attention to detail. Congrats!

Welcome matey…great first post love the second shot…Look forward too seeing more from you :).

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback

DEREK FRENZO: Thanks for checking out the showreel too, and thanks for the feedback

RYANKINGSLIEN: Thanks alot mate

DELTATHUND3R: Thanks and I’ll try and get some more work up here for you…just need to make some first…<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register(“postmenu_610448”, true); </SCRIPT><SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register(“postmenu_610448”, true); </SCRIPT>

OUCH!

Nice work overall, a detailed howto will win you lots of fans. You seem to have put a lot of attention into the moment of time. And it carries through…

Lots of small issues like the horses, but the overall is well done.

You’ve put in lots of time and thought into this work and it shows. You’ll find this site the most involved site on the web! The talent here is amazing, so dig right in ask the questions that vex you the most. Do lots of searches.

I’d personally like to know more of your own background, schooling, interests (besides Scottish history;) ) and I agree with others here, breaking down your work will gain you a good amout of feedback and new friends. So if you’ve got the time give it a go.
Great beginnings!
Gary

Very nice! There is an angle that you posted on your website that is my fave.

Thanks people,

Jason and hyper1: I think I can manage some kind of diary of my working methods, I’ll get started on that at the weekend, if people are interested.

Vancross: Now I’m curious which one you like…

Hyper1, just to let you know a little bit of my background, as requested, I have a degree in fine art/painting at Grays school of art in aberdeen and following that after I was accepted to do my Postgraduate Masters in 3D at the NCCA, Bournemouth University. I have just finished the year at Bournemouth a few weeks ago and it was a very enjoyable experience, it was my first experience of 3D and I’m still sure it was the right thing to do to make the transition because I love working with these programs and am constantly inspired by the 3D work of others.

I love films and games equally and am currently seeking work in the UK in either of these industries.

I have a load of WIP pictures of this project but untill I have more time to fish them out and explain them chronologically and my working methods - here are some fairly horrible looking polypainted horses teeth to keep you going!

Awesome first post mate welcome to the forums.

This is totally brutal and i love it. Very well done, i love the face on the living horseman, total hatred.

keep posting!

vancross, Thanks for clearing that up! cheers for that

macgregor_oi, thanks mate, it’s really great to hear people saying such positive things about my project, especially with all the other eye candy around on this site!

As I said before, I plan to gradually put up some of my WIP work so I thought I would start with drawings that I did to help me with the modelling. People have been saying kind things about the action in the models, which is great because I did some sketches to try and get a real sense of the motion/movement.

I’ll upload some more stuff soon for anyone that is interested.

cool! it reminds me of age of empire
wouldn it be more realistic if on the first photo there was more dust in front of the camera?
and um… i never rode a horse but wouldnt the axeman keep his knees more thightly to the horse?
anyway this looks great, full of action and this suspense xD
