banding in displacement rendering. fix?

I’ve been getting strange banding and artifacts when I render displacements in maya 2009 mental ray. I’m not sure if this is some resolution issue…(its a 4096 map?)…how it’s being rendered in zbrush? or what’s going on.

Any help would be grand.

It's a 32 bit map rendered in ZB r3 with adaptive on, SmoothUV on, Flip V on, 3 Channel on, and DPsubpix set to 4. the map looks super clean in photoshop, and the UVs are virtually distortion free, done with UVlayout and roadkill. As for my displacement settings, I have filtering off, feature displacement off, this rendering is with the approximation settings at min 2 max 5....and 0.001. With 'FINE' selected. thanks, -Bayard

tested the same rendering in 3Delight. Same banding issue, so must be something to do with how it’s generated in zbrush, not maya or mentalray.
