Background Image Reference

I want to sculpt using an image reference. I followed these instructions:

  1. Import your background image. Choose the Flat Color material, then press Texture>Crop and Fill to place it on the canvas.
  2. Select a material such as Fast Shader for modeling.
  3. Select the object you want to model.
  4. Set the Draw>Rgb Intensity to something like 70%. This will let you see the reference image through the model while you work on it. Draw the model and start sculpting.

#1) The tool is not transparent! Why? I set the rgb to 50%. I can’t see through it.

#2) The tool keeps interacting with the actual background. I go to layer -> displace z. When I return, I’m no longer in Edit mode. I can’t alter the tool. If I create a new tool, it interacts with the background image again.

How do I do this?

Thanks!

Tool>Load Tool, from the ZTools directory choose ImagePlaneX. Then in the Texture pallet, go Import and find the ZTools>ImagePlaneX.psd file. I have a copy of that PSD in the same directory called ImagePlaneXCurrent.psd that I use so I don’t overwrite the original.

Once you have the texture applied you can append it as a subtool of the ZTool you’re working on. Transparency will now work.
