'Backfacing' Retopology issue

Hey guys. Just posting about a pretty simple issue really. I’ve been using zbrush a few months now and this is the first time this as happened. I am currently retopologising a zsphere mesh and annoyingly there is some sort of ‘backfacing’ option active so I can see and select the verts at the back of the mesh which is making me miss-click more often than not.

Anyway, it’s probably a silly question but does anyone know how to rectify this

Thanks guys

In Preferences > Draw submenu, change ‘Front Opacity’ to 0.95 and ‘Back Opacity’ to 0.01.

I think if you go into preferences and into the draw options you can adjust the opacity so that you don’t select the vertices on the other side, just turn the back face opacity all the way up, and I think transparency has to be turned on. Hope that helps.

Hey thanks for the responses guys but I think the issue is directly related to retopology. Heres an image of the issue:

For some reason if I follow your instruction the wireframe dissapears slightly ‘into’ the mesh and the verts that i can’t see are still selectable. When I have used retopology before The verts that aren’t visible aren’t selectable either. I’m not sure what happened.

Thanks again.

Hmm maybe try switching materials, or turning off transparency. Hope that it doesn’t stop you from completing your retopology, good luck!

The points you can’t see are not selectable. The cursor is only snapping to those points.

Well, you also have the option of using the Appended ZSphere Method which is probably the prefered method right now anyway.

I always use the “append zsphere as a subtool” method because changing the draw size does make the topology lines sink into the mesh a bit, making it hard to see in a different way.

Unfortunately, the curser isnt just snapping to those points, they are also selectable making it next to impossible retopologise the entire character.

I will just have to keep fiddling and searching.

When you are in retopology mode and are using the ctl key to set the draw point often times an invisible masking of points gets set.

So anytime you find you can’t connect or move points try holding down LMB while holding ctl and drag in an empty space on the canvas to clear the invisible mask.

Edit: I’m sorry, I read that post as “Isn’t snapping” rather then Isn’t just snapping.

I think you are best to just start over by appending a zsphere as a subtool, select the zsphere and then go to the topology subtool and hit retopologize. Doing it the otherway has always been a nightmare for me in ZB 4.0, even with the draw size adjusted. The other way is a breeze…just use the projection feature in the subtool menu as the projection button at the bottom of the list won’t be accessible with this method.

Also if you are afraid of losing you work so far by switching to the other method, you don’t have to lose it.

In the state it is in now, hit “A” to see the adaptive skin preview, then hit “make polymesh” to send the work you have done so far into the tool box.

-load your base mesh

-append a zsphere as a subtool, press N to make the zshere the active subtool

-go to the topology subpalette, hit “select topology” and grab the polymesh of the work you’ve done so far

-hit “edit topology” and finish the work you started.

Ok thanks Nancyan, I will just start again tbh. I had only just really started retopology and won’t be that much trouble to start again. Its just I hadn’t done any retopology since 3.5 r3 so i’d not seen this issue before. Thanks to everyone for their help and comments

Z4R2 comes out in 5 weeks. Hopefully Retopology will be working a lot better.
