Backface Masking Problem

Hey guys,

I’m sculpting my low poly game mesh. The cloth skirt is basically attached at waist level and has no backfaces below the waist. I am trying to detail the cloth right now but the brush skips the top surface and paints right through to the legs underneath. I can’t even isolate the two elements with a mask because whatever I paint onto the cloth affects the legs underneath. Its like the “brush affect depth” threshhold is too high.

I need to be able to sculpt on these two parts indepentantly but for some reason I cannot.

Any clues?

Cheers,
Sparky.

brush>backface masking

at +100 you can only sculpt with Zadd -100 for Zsub though.

What you probably want to do though is either mask off the legs or hide them.

Set up a polygroup for legs and coat tails so you can easily mask or hide them too

Thanks, Goast - but that had little to no effect. I can’t be sure but it seems the backface masking tool is busted. I mean it was only just reintroduced in this version so its not hard to beleive. Is there a way to import the original low poly obj (with an adjusted coat and seperated hairpiece) having all my scuplt data trasfer accross?

Sparky.

Bump!

So is there a way of reimporting the low-poly model? I’m stuck with this issue and have less than one day to deliver this game character.

Please help.

Sparky.

There is a way to do it. But you’re not going to like it.

And now that I look at your mesh I told you to do the wrong thing  You do need to hide or mask the legs when you want to sculpt on the coat tail things.

Backface masking won’t work for your mesh because the normals of both of those are facing the same direction.

If you really want to break that mesh into pieces then do some searches on projecting one mesh onto another.

You can always break the mesh into two different parts inside Zbrush as well.

  1. make polygroups of the pieces you want to split on the lowest SubD.
  2. tool>geometry>grp split.

Now you’ll have your split mesh.
Hope you meet your deadline.

Thanks for the info mate. Big help. Would you happen to have any links on projecting sculpt detail onto another model? I really need all the help i can get on this one.

Cheers,
Sparky

I don’t believe I have done any videos on it yet.

but I know cannedmushrooms and NickZ have videos. They’re both active ZBC guys, do a search and look for their threads.

Many thanks Goast. I’ll do just that!

Sparky.
