B\w texture masks - the easiest and precious way..?

Hi there %) I have a question, mb a dumb one :o I searched through the forum and got like hundred results with no needed info for me %( Mb I overlooked something here or smthng basic in the manual…
So, the point is how to make nice b\w masks for different parts of a mesh (I need it `cause I do all the rendering in 3dsMAX). Not just arms or other simple-to-pick-out part like belt or helmet… But parts of the texture like splats of blood or rust - which have torn edges and somewhat blends with “underlying” colour (i.e. skin). I use photoshop to pick out needed colours from texture and contrast it, plus zbrush highliter tool, but the result is often crappy. So, is there a way to make nice masks (mb some way to rip out a material mask? Like, paint blood\rust with colour and material and then get the b\w mask with white for blood\rust and black for skin\metall), with clean edges (instead the one I use)? Hope, I made myself clear :o

Thnx in advance for your replies, sorry if this question was covered already - couldn`t find it :o

One approach would be to use Projection Master to paint your grayscale map.

Well, Im using projection master, but, you see, with pm I cant get results needed. Some kind of material masks would be perfect.

Have you seen this tutorial from the FAQ?

Ara-ara, silly me :o Overlooked it. Thank you for this and sorry for bothering you goes away in search for tools to fix up my brains

Another method: supposing you have painted your model with materials in Projection Master. You have a nice rusted material that you want to select in Photoshop.

  1. Export the texture as it is so you have a backup copy. Save any materials you have modified. Also make sure you’ve saved your model.

  2. Clear the canvas, then with the model texture selected press Texture>Crop and Fill.

  3. Select the material you used for the rusted look and run through all the Modifiers sliders putting them to 0.

You’ll now have a texture with black wherever you had painted ‘rust’. Export to Photoshop.

Wow, thanks! I got close to this during experimentaions, but not close enough %) Thank you all still in search for mentioned tools %)
