Awkwardness issue

I noticed that when I use my pen to switch from one layer to another,
I accidentally scroll the slider a tiny bit, losing the initial opacity of the layer, something rather annoying.Wonder if anyone else has the same problem…

Another thing… I noticed that ztools with multiple layers and subd levels saved in ZB 3.5 have problems with layers when imported in ZB 4.0.
Is this normal? Cause I want to continue my work on a few older projects using 4.0 and it gets hard.

The documentation says that layers might not come in correctly.
you just need to export out your layers as meshes and import them into a new layer in 4.

I see, thank you  I have to study the manual a bit more then…

I believe you can also use the arrow keys to jump between keyframes. I haven’t messed around with keyframes yet so i’m not sure if that really does work, but it is worth a try.

You see, I find it really time consuming to use the arrows instead of point and click with the wacom, or perhaps leave the pen and select layers with the mouse. I would prefer to have a small dot or something infront of each layer, so that I can click there to make the layer active (something like Mudbox has).As much as I find truly awkward thing to have to transfer my model layer by layer as a bunch of ztools from 3.5 to 4.0. (I am not talking about 2-3 layers and such, but many more). I would really like to ask the beta testers how they overcome these issues.

I’ll have to agree. simply selecting layers has become a tricky affair. I also permanently change the values of my layer unintentionally. the only way I found to prevent this, is to select the eye, but that also shuts it off, so I have to click again which means I have to click a layer twice to select it.

As a beta tester all I can tell you is I try and use layers as little as possible now due to the UI changes.

“As a beta tester all I can tell you is I try and use layers as little as possible now due to the UI changes.”

Could you please be a little more specific? for example you prefer to use keyframes?
Btw, I would welcome a “lock” button on each layer (as far as I know, every program with layers has something like this - again Mudbox does, Photoshop does, XSI does etc). I am really grateful to Pixologic for getting this major upgrade for free but I would pay for such “minor” but of great importance features.
Oh - another feature of great importance for me that I would pay for as well (and again Mudbox does have it from version 1.0);
I would really like to be able to create different, new layers per each subd level, whenever I feel like to. This note “this function requires the highest subdivision level to be active.Switch to the highest subdivision level and try again” is ruining my day.

do i understand you correctly in that you as a beta tester are also not quite happy with layer ui?

well, we had that in 3.5, but instead could not do a change on let’s say level 2 and deactivate/activate it on level 6. you had to sculpt on level 2, dial up to 6 to see how it looks there and jump back down again to turn it off.

it’s a trade off, and it’s one one I need to get used too.

I find the odd layer selection much more bothering. especially since I don’t quite understand why in the world I need an adjustment slider on the layer itself and below in the menu. is there a purpose for this I have not discovered yet?

You’re absolutely right Julian_K, we did have that in 3.5 (where I still prefer to work  ) and maybe we all have to try out the new tools/workflows and see what happens… As for me, I have a slight obsession (sic) with good layering tools possibly cause my start in CG was done with Autocad

Count me in. I have a deep dislike for the new layer system as well. What a HUGE loss.
