Awesome Tutorial by Tjerk Otten

Hey, I saw this really cool tutorial called “The Sunflower Fountain” on 3dm3.com today and thought I would share it with everyone. Tjerk Otten is amazing! Check it out, it’s 6 pages long:

Really nice. Yet not what you would call a tutorial on how to use zbrush. Never mind. Hint appreciated.

I really do love these images and the tutorial! Very realistic. I learned from it.
Thanks for the link. :+1:

I wouldn’t consider that a good tutorial. Most of what makes the image look decent is the render, and nothing of how the render was achieved was mentioned. Looking at a bunch of models, textures and displacement maps isn’t anywhere near what it could have been, especially when there’s nothing mentioned how how they were created (other than, “I took a bunch of photos.”) how they were applied… pretty much nothing.

Respect to the artist, and to those who did get something from the tutorial, but if you’re going to call a tutorial awesome, see if you can pick one that’s more than a bunch of pretty pictures. To me, those six pages were a bit of a waste of time… if you can understand where I’m coming from.

Everyone has his own opinion and i personally really learned something just looking at the images he added. Further on the composition is real nice.
Maybe it’s no worth to you, but others can learn a lot from these six pages.
So please respect the opinion of others when they think it’s awesome

I taste a bit of jealoussy in your words…:frowning: Sorry.

It’s a bad tutorial. That’s fact, not a statement of jealousy. I’m one artist, and he’s another. I don’t feel jealous at all. The fact is, in the grand scheme of things that tutorial is a long way from being much more than a bunch of pretty pictures. You call it a tutorial, I call it a gallery. Everyone can learn from a gallery, but I wouldn’t call one an awesome tutorial.

You didn’t read what I wrote… I said exactly that. Power to you if you got something from it, and respect to him- he’s a great artist. At the end of the day though I’ve had my say, and you’ve had yours. You posted to this thread because you wanted people to like the ‘tutorial’ as you did, and I responded so people after a decent tutorial could be saved reading six pages. That’s life on a forum, so try not to take it personally.

…tutorial indeed

I gotta go with Reactor on this one. Props to Tjerk Otten for the top row art, but a “making of” that’s more like a diary isn’t my idea of a good tutorial.

Yeah I’m going to have to agree with Reactor here. Calling this a tutorial is like calling the special features on my Spiderman DVD a tutorial :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s extremely entertaining and interesting to check out, but you won’t learn much from it. As someone else said, the strength of the final piece was in the render itself, but this “tutorial” didn’t say anything about the light rig, or render settings he used. He didn’t even mention the renderer he used, or the software he used to render it

Fun to see, people talking about my work. The Making off that i wrote was indeed not a tutorial, but that is not important.People can learn alot from making off’s that is a fact. I have alot of special editions from great movies. These special editions let me see alot of the project, and by that i can adapth and help myself with my own art. I Didn’t talk alot about the technical aspect, because it was more of a storyline, so i used a different approach. If you want to know something more about the project, perhaps this forum can help.

Im currently working hard on my new project. The Chamber Of Oceans. I Used Zbrush for some parts in here. And im going to make a Video Making off of this project later on.

I Saw this thread somehow and i just wanted to answer. Respect to everybody and hope to make alot more artwork for you all to see.

would like to see it 2 but the www.3dm3 link isnt working for me.
always get
"print_standard_error(…)
is now redundant. Instead, use
standard_error(fetch_error(…))

"…

The links will work again soon i think, cause all the making off projects give that error message on 3dm. Hope it will be fixed soon. Thanks for comment.

I agree with reactor, I’m quite new to ZBrush, and this tutorial learns me … nothing. I don’t even know what he’s doing to get to his fountain shape. Probably because… ITS NOT SHOWED.

There are clearly problems with the site. Took way too long to open and I’m on a super fast connection. The links link to the wrong files. It almost seems abandoned.
