AUV/GUV - animation

hi, just want to know, will there be any problem if i use AUV/GUV in Zbrush if i plan to animate my character back in Maya? Is it better to manually layout your UVs before you bring it in to zbrush if you plan to animate?

If you’re going to use normal maps, you shouldn’t use AUVTiles or GUVTiles. For anything else (including displacements) you should be fine. In fact, Tiles-type mapping provides the least amount of texture distortion. It just doesn’t make much sense to the naked eye; but the computer doesn’t have that problem.

Okay, thanks Aurick, but why doesnt it work good for normal maps?

It’s ok with the red/green maps (object space). But with the blue maps (tangent space) it comes down to math. The math that makes that type of normal map work involves flipping the normals whenever the map crosses a UV seam. This means that the seams need to be carefully placed on the model so as to hide them. That’s just not possible with AUVTiles or GUVTiles.
