asus eee slate pc

Hi Im thinking of trying one of these new pcs with zbrush.

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Slate-EP121-1A011M-12-1-Inch-Tablet/dp/B004HKIIF8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302420027&sr=8-1

But Im not sure how zbrush will function. Anyone had a try ?

Hey,

I got one of these about a month ago (the 64gb one). I’ve loaded it with zBrush, Maya 2011 and Photoshop CS5 and everything works perfectly. on zBrush I’m able to sculpt up to 7 million polygons with no lag. You start to feel a lag around 10 million.

Prassure sensitivity is about the same as in my intuos 4. It’s also pretty responsive on every other application. All in all this is a really powerful tablet. The only down side is that is that the battery time is about 3.5hrs on regular use and about 1.5 to 2.5hrs using zBrush depending on how heavy your model is. Also the pen that comes with it doesn’t have a button, so you’ll need to get another one from amazon or the Wacom store. Make sure that it’s a “Wacom Penabled” pen. These are designed to work on tablet PCs.

I’m really happy with mine
Hope this helps

Hey Blas7er

Thats sounds awesome… what are the chances of you doing a demo video using zbrush, and one if you use max or maya. That would be awesome. Im dying to get one of these and would love to see this in action. Does it support direct X? thanks for your input its greatly appreciated!!!

Hey snoops3d,

I’ll see if i get a chance this weekend and do a quick demo using maya and zbrush. about direct x. not so sure about it yet. I would assume it does but I haven’t tried any games on it yet.

Nontheless, all programs run great with no hitch even when running maya, zbrush and photoshop at once!

I’ll work on that demo, and get back to you guys

Oh man thank thank thank you… that will be awesome!

Hey guys,

I made a quick demo last night of zbrush on the Eee Slate. It’s uploading to youtube now. It’s taking a bit to process it. I’ll post the link when it’s done. Maybe in a few hours today.

Thank you so much man I apreciate it more than you know!!!

Hey guys here’s the quick video I made of the Eee Slate using ZBrush.

It was a bit long so youtube compressed too bad but I hope you get the point

Hope this helps
Enjoy

Thank you for taking the time to make the video man, it answered all my questions. Im ordering one tomorrow. THANKs AGAIN!!

Hey,
Always happy to help my fellow ZBrushers!! It’s definitely a great computer/tablet. As I said I’m in love with mine. I also get a lot more work done, since I now can do it from my couch, hehehehehe.

One thing to keep in mind when you get yours is to install the Wacom drivers from wacom.com DON"T INSTALL THE WINDOWS DRIVER FOR WACOM FROM THE WINDOWS UPDATE. I had crazy BSOD my first week using it, and had to reinstall windows 7. It seems that the Wacom drivers from the windows update conflict with the ones from the Wacom site. Use the ones from wacom.com and not the ones from the windows update. They appear as Optional Updates in windows update. Otherwise you won’t get pressure sensitivity on Photoshop and ZBrush.

I’ll see if I can put a video explaining that too.

Thanks for the heads up I would have never known that…thank you

Hey guys just posted a video explaining how to deal with the driver conflict that happens when you install both the Windows Updates drivers for wacom and thedrivers for Wacom Penabled. Hope this helps:

Awesome I have one on the way and I was really concerrned about this. Thanks for the help man its much appreciated!!!

Sweet thanks for sharing!

No problem. Always happy to help. Please let me know how your turns out Snoop. I’m sure you’re gonna love it.

Thankyou for your reply’s… I must confess I was on the brink of purchase then ran out of funds ( Bla Bla ) I’m now saving up for this ace bit of kit after seeing the video. I think its a must have item. Another bit for your thoughts though found this http://www.shepy.co.uk/blog/modlock/ and thought with
the addition of the pen could mean you don’t need key board and perhaps you could just sit and sketch… Its a little app that give you GUI with a few keyboard keys that will sit on the screen so you maybe don’t need the key board… Needs testing though. Any volunteers ?

OK first off its its awesome I love it.

Now for the details

I have the 64 ssd/4 gig of ram version, and I have installed:

Zbrush 4
photoshop cs2
max 2012

the performance of the asus is excellent
zbrush I can get 8 million polys on a sub tool, though there is a pretty decent viewport lag at 8 mil, so I will try to keep my sub tools between 6-7 mil.
Photoshop not really doing anything to intense at the moment working at 1024 x 1024 no lag
max 2012 is aweosme thanks I think in large part to vast improvements in 2012 viewport poly handling ablities, I can get anywhere from 6 million to 12 million polys, and its still usable. 6 million everythings great at 12 million view port start to chug a bit and requires a bit more patience on my end. I have not tested direct x shaders yet, lighting or rendering, but I will.

I may also add a video of mine in the next week or 2 depending on when I can get free from work.

Overall im extremely happy with mine and plan on staying out of my dungeon chained to my desktop beast as much as possible.

Anyway hope this helps anyone considering the purchase.

PS the biggest challenge in getting one of these is finding them in stock, I had to hound stores because they usaully got very small shipments and those shipment sold out that day due to pre-orders, and other people hounding those sites.

I’m also considering purchasing one of these, and I’d be interested to know from any users how you get around not having access to the shift, alt and control keys when a penabled wacom stylus only has two buttons?

Your feedback would be appreciated

Hey, thanks for this thread, I actually just bought one of these partially based on your recommendation. In general I am really loving it, but I am having an issue in Zbrush where the whole tablet panel in preferences is greyed out. This means I don’t have any pressure sensitivity in ZB (although I do have it everywhere else) and obviously this ain’t good. I have installed the drivers from wacom. I know this issue usually happens when zbrush isn’t detecting the tablet somehow, but I have no idea what to do to resolve it on a tablet pc. Any help?

the sensitivity works, but not for zbrush. i looked under preferences in zbrush and the tablet option is grayed out. it’s like it doesn’t recognize it as a tablet pc. i hope someone figures this out soon. kinda sucks, cause this is the only reason i bought this tablet.
