artifacting problem zbrush>max>mentalray

Does anyone know why this happens?
demo soldier with simple polypaint to create texture map exported .obj then imported to max and rendered with mental ray

I noticed that the higher res the mesh is, the more artifacting i get

after some experimenting- this is only happening when I add a daylight system in max with mr sun and mr sky…
originally I posted here thinking it was a zbrush import or export setting or something, but now I know its a max issue so I’ll leave this post up for a while just in case anyone out there knows the answer, but I’ll eventually take it down because its not a zbrush issue.
