Upon first install of ZB2 itried the Art Deco brush right away, and it worked great!
for some reason, a few weeks later (even after watching the Art Deco zscript) I can no longer “see” any painted strokes! After painting on the canvis, The Snapshot Icon Appeers and i can enter edit mode…but no paint or texture is visible.
sadicustry- this might help
- when using just the DecoBrush on canvas set render to flat render mode
another way - fill the canvas area with the Plane3D tool and paint on that as your canvas and do not set render to flat render mode
Another way is to paint the canvas with the simple brush, the single layer brush, the paint brush, etc and then select the DecoBrush and it should paint over the other brushes and if you left blank canvas area between the other brushes it should not paint that area- but you can then switch to flat render mode and see that the DecoBrush painted them (the blank areas) but does not show in the other render modes.
Hope this helps
Thanks for the Tips, But i have tried all the settings i can think of. I am not sure what is wrong. When i first installed ZB2 it worked fine and i had used default settings.
I have also tried using PM, with RGB, Zadd, and nothing is visible.
Usualy after running a Zscript, you can try to repeat what you’ve learned…well i ran the super cool Art Deco Script and when i tried to use the brush i get Nothing!
The other brushes seem to work fine.
has this happened to Anyone else ?
Yep, I’m having the same problem: can’t paint with Deco brush. The script has no trouble with it. The only difference is that it never worked for me.
Change your stroke to “Drag Rect”.
Make sure that “rgb” and “Zadd” are on.
Make sure a texture is active.
I’ve tried every setting combination possible (including the one that you mentioned, that should be the right one) with no luck.
Can anyone help, please??
Two things to try.
- Press LAYER:Fill (clears current layer and fills it with a material and selected texture map) Draw with Deco Brush.
if that doesn’t work…
- In ZBrush2 directory rename UICustom.cfg to TEMP_UICustom.cfg and enter ZBrush. again, Press LAYER:Fill (with a default User Interface) Draw with Deco Brush.
Sven
ps. rename your UICustom.cfg file back to recover all your settings for your own custom interface - or, if you previously saved some setting that prevents your Deco Brush from working, you may have to recustomize and setup your user interface settings.
After i restarted ZB2, the Art Deco Brush worked. That happens often, if i try something and it won’t work i first restart ZB2 and try again. Usualy the tool will work.
Not much of a answer to “why” it’s not working to begin with.
…also notice the image i posted:
“rgb” and “Zadd” are on, but the DRAG RECT is not.
Make sure to Change your stroke to “Drag Rect”.
I guess the “why” is something you have to figure out. Obviously you are doing something to make it not work.
The best way I’ve found to isolate something in my own work habits that cause a certain effect is to experiment. Control your test so that you are changing things one step at a time, then test the Deco Brush each step to see if it still functions. When it does stop functioning, backtrack and reset what you just changed. That way you can answer your own question: “WHY”.

Still won’t work. I don’t even have an UICustom.cfg file!!! All my settings are correct. When I run the DecoBrush script, it works, but when I stop somewhere in the script and try to use the same brush that uses the script, I van’t draw!!!
Please help, this is driving me nuts
Look at the Draw settings. Odds are, Zadd is turned off. You either need to turn it on (and possible Mrgb, as well, depending on your needs) or fill the canvas before you can paint.
Only having Rgb turned on with no Zadd means that you are painting color on existing pixols. If there are no existing pixols on the canvas, then nothing will be painted. This goes for any brush or tool, not just the Deco brush.
Nope, in fact I’ve learned to use the program quite fast (that’s one of the many virtues of zbrush ), so everything regarding to use of the tool itself has nothing to do with the problem, I think it’s more a technical problem.
Thanks anyway, I really appreciate your concern
I have been completely unable to duplicate this effect. Could you save the tool and send it to [email protected]?
Thanks.
“I guess the “why” is something you have to figure out. Obviously you are doing something to make it not work.”
…so ZBrush never just locks up and has to be restarted…? I want THAT version.
I use to agree with the above quote, but as i am learning, as awesome a program ZB is it’s also not perfect.
One of the cool things about ZB is the forum!
Sad,
As Matthew suggests, you should save the Deco Brush (the one that doesn’t work) as a tool file - drop that into a zip file and post the zip file in this thread.
Perhaps someone else can download and test the tool and suggest some solution that will get you going with Deco Brush…

I have recently encounered this problem as well but may have the cause. The probem started when using my tablet (wacom intuos I). If I startup using z and only use my mouse everything works fine. If I change over to using the tablet I loose the abiltiy to use the deco brush with the mouse but it retains for the tablet. If I work back and fourth enough I lose the deco brush all together and have to restart.
I have no idea if this is an all around problem or perhaps tablet specific or just my system but I have not found a fix for it unless I restart.
I am having the same issue. I too use a Wacom and a mouse. Its quite frustrating as I like the decobrush and half the time it siply does not work. I checked and rechedked the settings and they are indeed correct. DragRect, Zadd, etc…
Is there any kind of fix for this or is it just another Zbug?
Scott
I’ve had this happen as well, but I did something (after MUCH searching for an answer) and managed to find the answer. Right now I can’t recall, but I’ll look into it…
I was wondering if there is more news about the Decobrush. I like it too, but many times it just doesn’t work. Zadd, MRGB, everything is all right, but sometimes it just doesn’t do anything. Is it know what causes it? Has it something to do with the use of a tablet? Is there a fix, or will there be one? In the 7 months that I used Zbrush I have never encountered a bug. Is this the first?
