apply for job as cg artist, general manners?

I’ve recently begun to apply to studios as a cg artist. I have experience as a freelancer. A professional animator suggested that I should never send my demoreel anywhere, but only mail/upload my Resume and Statement of Purpose to studios. Only when they reply should I give them a link to my demoreel/send them a hardcopy. I just wanted another opinion on this since I have some doubts.

Should I send them a link to my reel also? Some studios directly want the reel, while some studios dont say anything at all. What is the proper etiquette in this regard?

It depends largely on the company and in general they will state so on their website, so you should definitely have a look at their Recruiting page first.

Most bigger studios require you to fill out an online form first, some of them will contact you then if they are interested in seeing your work (Double Negative is an example) or you will be required to send it straight after that and the online form is only so they can link your information to your reel (Weta does it this way for example - they don’t accept unsolicited applications without an online form first).

If you are applying for an open position at a smaller shop you can in general send your reel straight away accompanied by the usual things like CV etc. but again you should check their website first on a case by case basis.

Thank you very much
