apply external uv textures

ok, I’m good with the uv disabling/poly painting and reimporting uv thing. but I do wonder if I can do a similar thing with external textures…

how can i apply a uv texture to a model and work further on it (without saving it as a ztl). let’s say i want to apply a color map i’ve made to a bump or normal channel or to work on spec and work further on it. can i apply the map, ditch the uvs and then reimport?

i know zbrush isn’t quite like a regluar texture painting app but i’d like to be able to apply uv textures to uv models.

thanks. such a helpful forum.

I’m trying to follow here. Are you saying that you want to import a texture and paint on that texture to modify it? If so, what you need to do is convert the texture to polypaint. You can then paint on it to your heart’s content. Once done, convert the polypaint back to texture again.

thanks for the reply aurick.

i get how to apply an rgb uv texture (although where/when to do so with the geometry division level is confusing). what i’m unsure about is applying a uv texture to the depth. i often use a color map as a base for a displacement and while painting normal maps in photoshop seems unlikely, i might do bump or displacement and want to work on it in zbrush.

thanks a ton.
