Ape

Gorillas are apes not monkeys. In general Monkeys have tail, apes do not, although there are some monkey (though rare) that do not have tails.

Wait a minute!
I’m a Monkey… I don’t have a tail.
Although I do have a tail bone… does that count?

this is looking great, love that last exspression.

its one thing to have a good Sculpt, but to give it character is always the iceing on the cake. and I think you are one that never leves that out…I cant think of one thing youve done that didnt have great character.

grom, there is nothing I hate more than disappointing a fan, well actually I guess that I would hate getting my eyes gouged out more, or having my hands chopped off, and I hate man’s inhumanity to his fellow man, so I guess there are a lot of things that I would hate more , but still, I always feel really badly when I have let a fan down. Sorry to disappoint you. Yes none of these images are perfect, I like to share the works in progress with my friends here on ZBC. These have all been really quick renders just to look at him mainly for my own purposes .I like to look at the stuff that I am working on at various stages of progression so I can see what I don’t like etc. That is one of the many things that I like about working digitally. You can get your modeling done to a point ,slap some color on and see it looking more finished ,see what changes that you want to make and make those changes and so on. I know I like to see other’s WIPS and see how they progress but maybe ,I don’t know, maybe I should just post work when I am totally happy with it myself. I guess the problem there is if I considered it totally finished and then let a fan down I would be even more devistated.
Framedworld, There use to be a time in my life when I would get really bent out of shape when someone called an ape a monkey, but I guess I have mellowed in old age.
VVDFX, I can think of a few.

Please keep posting them as you go Rick, I learn from watching the process.

I have gotten a few comments on wips of mine that have made me cringe, not understanding it still had a long way to go. I keep posting though , as sharing and watching other peoples the process is important way for me to keep gowing as an artist.

Internet comunication seems to make all coments like this far harsher then they were intended.

Nice Monkey:lol:

Greg

Yes, please keep on posting stuff like that!

I for one like to watch a guy with your experience and skills

having fun, testing and experimenting or just playing around

with 3d objects, techniques and so on.Most of us won´t

probably ever have the chance to watch it actually and it´s a

great way to “participate” and learn.

Maybe this guy was not as detailed and elaborate as,for

example, your Boris Karloff as Frankenstein´s monster (which

is my personal favourite so far, and one of the reasons i had

to have ZB for myself btw;) ), but it has a lot of soul and

expression though. And it has got a special something and

individuality and that´s what i like!

Cheerz, J.

Edit: forgot something

PS:And often an “imperfect” thing or a fast scribble or so turns

out to be important later on,that´s at least what i have

experienced many times  .

Rick,
I agree with Jmeyer,
Please, keep posting WIPs’! It’s nice to watch your works in progress.

I admire your honesty about dissapointing fans…
But remember…You can’t please all the people all the time.
It has to be tough sometime when expectations are so high, but here I think it’s good to remember everyone here is learning more every day, even if they’ve been doing it a while, they still keep learning as they go.

It’s tough to be an artist sometimes, we’re a sensitive lot.

“Keep em’ coming”

Rick:
Fantastic model!
I am new to ZBrush and wondering what your basic workflow is on creating a model like this. I’m not looking for a long description, just curious if you do some of the modelling in a different 3D progarm or create the whole model in ZBrush or ?
Thanks.
MItch

hey rick… maybe it’s quite late but happy birthday master.
so you are sagittarius just like me, it was my birthday last week too.
cheers
and of course congrats for the ape the last render is realy nice.

Keep those WIP’s coming :+1:

You represent the rest of us over the half century mark who are struggling to make the transition from traditional media to CG. It’s great to see how your sculpting experience transferred to CG so quickly. It’s come a loooooooooooooong way since sitting down and punching hundreds of cards just to print a calendar. I remember spending hours with a chart deciding where characters should go to put a Mickey Mouse made of rows of letters on the top. I had to take a summer course for High Schoolers at BYU to even touch a computer. The building was kept at 55 degrees to keep the tubes cool and a slide rule was way faster than a computer. OK, I’m done waxing nostalgic. Sorry
It would be cool if the board had a separate thread for finished works and the rating was done there instead of on WIP’s. Something like CGTalks forums.

Hi Guys, I made a bunch of morph maps of my ape and wanted to try animating them in LW9 using ZB displacement maps and basically couldn’t get it to work. Which is weird because I have before. After several crashes I ended going back to LW8.5 and just used the displacement maps as bump maps. After all I mainly wanted to see how the morph maps worked. Ended up with some animation that looked a little like stop motion so I ran with that and in After Effects I remapped the time to make it even more stop motion like .Then garbaged it up to look like some old footage.
I thought that the older ZBrushers might get a kick out of it. The Zip file took about 5 min to downlaod on my computer so be patient.

Very cool effect. Just add Fay Wray to the picture.

Hey Rick.
Man I really like that.
Really feels like stop motion.
Tell me more on how you did it.
The stop motion effect I mean.
Also what did you use for the fur?

Oh man, oh man, cool, looks so much like a project from a few years back, what wonderful iamges!

Brilliant - but then of course it would be… :+1:

Right Voodoo!! Looks like those reto pupets!
Just miss 2 or 3 planes flying behind!

Rick,

Not bad at all. what I would do is kill some frames and offset others to make it look really like stop motion.

I would recommend if you are using Lightwave, to try animating in messiah with bones in the face (the way taron, myself, and about 2 or 3 other people in the world do). You’ll find that your motions won’t be so non-linear when you are animating with bones.

This is fantastic stuff MM !!

Its got hair too !!!

It"s so damn exciting to see you animating your sculpts.
There is so much that you can show us.

Remember, the ridiculous learning curve, the crashes and setbacks are all worth it !!
If you can get on top of this, You could set the bar for us all.

It’s a pleasure watching you work MM. Looking forward to seeing more.

MM,
Holy cow!
I didn’t realize just how much I missed the good feeling animated stuff like this gave me until now. I wish they still made movies with old school animation that looked like this. Looks like something I grew up watching. King Kong, Might Joe, the good stuff.

You managed to turn this into something totally unique and definitely fun!

Thanks for sharing it, and I am envious of how far you’ve come, but in a good way

Defiantely inspiring… :+1:
~Brian

Very cool. The aging was a bit overdone, and the timing was slow. But it was just a test. It does remind me of the original King Kong.

Does lightwave have a way of dropping frames from the animation? I think this would enhance the effect.
