I double click an alpha in lightbox, and its loaded into texture instead. This seems sporadic, and sometimes it works properly, and other times I have to select the alpha in lightbox a bunch of times until it drops in. (And then of course I need to either reselect the texture I want, or turn it off.
Very annoying!
The alphas have to be Grayscale (8 or 16 bit) for ZBrush to be able to tell the difference. If it’s just a gray RGB file then ZBrush sees it as a texture and puts in the Texture palette. If it’s Grayscale, ZBrush sees it as an alpha and puts it in the Alpha palette.
Hmmm… almost all of the alphas I have were from the pixo library. I wonder if they need to clean it up some?

Photoshop can batch convert them. You could even create a droplet and drag and drop the files/folders on them.
Yes, if it has a .jpg extention it will be RGB. Just look for those and convert them in PS.
Time to hit up photoshop… but… I’ll be away from zbrush. Waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!
Yeah I can confirm this, and that some of the alphas included in the install have the issue.
And of course I just installed ALL the alphas from the pixo ldownload library. 8(

I can only do them individually. I don’t know how to batch convert from RGB to grayscale.
You should be able to do a batch conversion on a whole folder. Record the macro first with the operations required.
Ah, through a macro. I thought perhaps PS had an option to do it as part of the program.
However, I found that some of the alphas downloaded from pixologic were already in grayscale, and some of them were RGB. Wouldn’t you have to go through them individually anyway, and see which were which? Or would the macro continue to run, even if it couldn’t choose grayscale?
