Any way to save a tool when Zbrush crashes?

I lost track of time while sculpting and worked on something for 3 hours without even thinking to save. Low and behold the screen turns white and the pop up “Zbrush has stopped working” pops up.

Is there any way to save the tool or recover the work so I don’t lose everything?

If ZB has crashed, it’s pretty much lost. Your best bet is try to save often. If you’re forgetful (like me), a digital egg timer set to 15 minutes (available in grocery and kitchen stores) can be a valuable asset. I know an automatic “autosave” has been a feature request for a while, but so far it hasn’t made it into the produce . . .

Can’t help you with your past modeling but for future modeling you might want to try enabling Preferences > Performance > Auto File Recovery. I have not tried the feature so maybe best to test it with some model and an action you know crashes ZBrush.

Remember to save the configuration if you enable auto file recovery.

I actually ran into an issue with this… it’s a bit odd. Whenever I enable auto-recovery, it crashes whenever I press load (or ANYTHING that pops up a WINDOWS EXPLORER WINDOW). To make sure the crash is happening here, I would enable auto recovery > store config > close Zbrush > reload Zbrush > try to load a file … and it crashes.

Odd, eh?

Yes, very strange. I get the same behaviour with Auto Recovery on. I am sure I read an official suggestion to turn it on. Perhaps that was for R1 or R2. Definitely not working for me in R3.

Auto Recovery should not be used with Windows 7.

Hi Marcus

I am still having no luck on my Vista 32 bit machine but with Vista 64 bit auto recovery seems to be working fine. Tried running the VC++ redistributable in the troubleshooting folder but zbrush still shuts down as soon as I use any action that involves the windows file dialog.

Of course it happened again. I know to save every 15 minutes but when there are times when you get into a groove and don’t think about anything else. That’s usually when everything crashes and you lose it. Figures

Hi marcus,

I also have these crash problems with ZBrush 3.5 R3 under Windows XP Pro x64 if Auto Recovery is turned on. I hope, this will be fixed.

Kind regards,
Tom
