This is something I cant really seem to find. Theres lots of tutorials for making organic things, like a face, or the body, but the best zbrush images I see tend to have a lot of non organic things like armor, weapons, ect. Are there any sites or tutorials you guys could recommend on how to do the all-so-mighty-difficult hard surface modeling like the kind the things you would see in gears of war. Im starting to think maybe they dont actually use zbrush for making the armor ( like ropes, chains/chainmail, layers of armor pads, etc) but instead for detailing (small buttons, stratches, stiching, emblems, ect), after taking it out of other packages like maya? Any feedback would be much appreciated because i dont think its talked about much.

However, at the end of the day, it is way more intuitive (currently) to do this type work in a program like Max or Maya, and then import into Zbrush for fine detail (bolts etc etc…).
Cheers,
Matt
Thanks for the post! Ive seen some of this stuff already, never saw the video thread though, really great way to organize things. So then…I guess i was right, the armor and objects you see in gears of war, and most highend game models are actually all made first in maya (or 3d max).
These references have more info for you:
I assume you have read the Epic Games interview on Pixologic.com about Gears of War and Zbrush - http://www.pixologic.com/interview/epic/1/. But in case you have not, enjoy!
There is also a character modeling book from D’Artiste called “Character Modeling 2” where some of the characters from the original Gears of War game are featured. The artist gives you a step by step demo of their workflow from Max to Zbrush.
