I can see the answer probably lies in dynamesh/clay polish, but I’m still getting used to what all the parameters do. Any tips would be appreciated.
I should add that I regularly use smooth, pinch, move and hard/soft polish brushes for this.

I hope more people chime in but theres a few different ways people do this:
Lots of times people will use masking and extruding combined with group loops for crisp edges on hard surface pieces. They’ll paint a mask over a section of a rough base mesh, extrude it, then use group loops and insert edges. I never do this so I can’t give specifics but its one method.
Another way is using a combination of trim dynamic, hpolish, and pinch. Now with hpolish in my experience it works nicer with light, repeated strokes vs hard pressure.
