Answered: zbrush 4 saving masks.

What is the right sequence for saving a mask with the new layer system? I seem to be able to save masks for a session but saving out the tool at a lower sub d then reopening it, playing with that saved layer’s settings wont bring up the mask.

subtool to level 7 then activate new layer

draw mask with layer in record mode

turn record off mask disappears? what is the eye icon for?

Save the tool at a lower subd and reimport it

layer present but mask is blurred and unusable.

Any help appreciated.

The eye icon is for layer visibility. Read the New Features PDF in your ZBrush 4\Documentation folder.

As for the masks you could make them into alphas. Later you can convert the alpha back to a mask again. This requires that the model have UV’s.
