Answered: Vehicle texturing Projection or polypaint?

Which is more popular method for creating vehicle textures?

PolyPaint is always the preferred method of painting in ZBrush. You can create 3D layers that are just for PolyPaint so that you can build up your painting and remove elements if desired. With SpotLight you can also do projection painting while the model is fully in 3D mode without the need to drop it and pick it up again. And PolyPaint is easily converted to texture at any time. In fact you can even start PolyPainting before you have UV’s or change your UV’s at any time without losing any work that you’ve already done.

I have been playing around with the new zBrush 4 features. I recently modeled a spaceship type vehicle that i would like to place a decal texture i created in photoshop at 1000x1000 resolution. when i use spotlight to paint the texture on the sculpt at its highest subdivision level it doesn’t look so great, there is a bit of rasterization and the edges of the text in the decal are not so crisp. I have used the zApplink and gotten better results, especially when i turn on antialiasing in the texture map submenu. at a distance the texture looks good but as i get closer to the object it becomes more obviously rasterized. i was hoping i could find some help/tips/or things-to-keep-in-mind when optimizing ‘decal-type’ textures for best results when applying them to a zbrush model.
