Are you running a 32-bit OS or a 64-bit OS? I suspect it’s 32-bit, which means that only 2 GB of RAM can be used by ZBrush because that’s all Windows will give it. That means that 8 1/2 million polygons is a little bit higher than you’ll be able to comfortably work with.
There are ways to work around this. For one thing, you can hide polygons that you’re not currently working with. This will allow ZBrush to focus resources where you need them. Another thing is to split the model into multiple SubTools. Two 4 million poly SubTools will give you the same amount of detail but much better performance.
