[Answered] RAM problem with Windows 7 and Zbrush 4r5

I’m doing a split mesh, which is pretty heavy but I’ve done heavier. I have 6 gigs of ram, dual SLI GeForce 560’s with over 2 gigs each, and a 2.80 6 core processor. I can watch in resource monitor that I’m only hitting about 65% of used RAM when I get the RAM error saying that I don’t have enough RAM. I can run the memory stress test and get around mid 80% without the Zbrush crashing or even missing a beat.

What gives?

what are you mem settings at? how much scratch disk space does Z have and how fast is the drive?

ZBrush doesn’t use your video card OpenGL/Ram at all, only your System RAM.
You only have 6 Gb, then windows is using something like 2 Gb. Add on the top of that some potential other applications running (browser, emails, etc…), then it can be easily 1 Gb more.
It means that ZBrush have only 3 Gb left of memory, making the maximum polygons limit to a lower level.

Also, ZBrush is a 32 bits application and then only use 4 Gb maximum of memory. Then it means that your current SubTool can have only 25-30 Millions of polygons no more.
