Try using Image Plane plugin instead of crop and fill. Texture>Image Plane>Load Image.

i prefer my ref baked on the document. how do i fix this?

draw your mesh on the canvas as per usual
don’t go into edit mode.
go into move
click and drag off the mesh to move the object forward and back in Z in relation to the plane of the canvas.
once you’re happy with it no longer clipping, go into edit mode and work as normal.

hi beta, ive tried that and everytime i hit edit after ive moved my mesh it snaps back to where it was…wth is going on

I’d go with the Image plane as zber2 suggested. There’s also layers which probably won’t help here.

An alternative is also to set Picker >> Depth >> Z to -1000 and then draw your model on the canvas. Press T to enter Edit mode and proceed from there. That particular slider instructs ZBrush to draw the model centered at a specific depth in pixols relative to the pixol clicked on when you start your stroke to draw the model. So when you’ve filled the canvas and set a value of -1000 you’re saying to draw the model 1,000 pixols closer to the camera than the canvas depth. You can of course use other values as necessary but -1000 is typically sufficient.

Actually because of changes to the way perspective works aurick’s picker suggestion will not work. (For the same reason that the old way of dragging outside the gyro no longer works.) The moment you enter Edit mode the model will snap back to the zero Z position.

Image Plane provides the simplest solution and I’d be interested to know why you don’t like using it, so that I might improve the plugin if I can (I wrote it). The end result of using the plugin (with a model in Edit mode) is no different from what you are trying to accomplish.

Anyway, the solution without using the plugin is:

  1. Turn off Edit and undo once. This will remove your model from the canvas.
  2. In the Layer palette set the Displace Z to something like positive 2000. Displacing the layer by positive 2000 will push it backwards, away from your model.
  3. Draw your model on the canvas and enter Edit mode. Check that it no longer cips the background; if it does, then you’ll need to repeat the process.

HTH,

thanks for all the replies everyone.

@marcus_civis

i love image plane, used it many times. but i like storing my reference as my background so no matter how i rotate the camera it is always there. that’s my only reason for not using in this situation. trust me,i love the tool. so nice in 4r4. thanks again guys, dragging the way aurick said is what did the trick. thanks again. best community out there!

This is exactly what the Image Plane plugin does if you use it while you have a tool in edit mode. You’re obviously missing something here. Maybe you are confusing the plugin with the old Image Plane Cube or Image Plane X.
