[Answered] A way to make a higher resolution Dynamesh without losing Polygroups?

If I change the Resolution using the bar and hit the Dynamesh button again, I lose all the Polygroups I’ve made so far. How do I save them for later?

You can’t do it directly, you must convert your polygroups, in PolyPainting, the updating your DynaMesh, then converting your polypainting to a polygroups.
You may need to use the new Merge Stray Groups function to clean the isolated polygroups.

Ew. That’s not very accurate. I’ll lose my painted work too.

I’m more than a little stunned there isn’t a feature for this.

Polygroups are based on the vertices. Dynamesh meanwhile completely eliminates and replaces every vertex as it retopologizes the entire mesh. There’s just no way you’re going to be able to preserve your polygroups and polypaint without severely changing the way dynamesh works, so you’re either going to have to stick with messy workarounds, or a cleaner workflow. Is there any particular reason you’re creating polygroups that you wish to maintain before you even have your basemesh and form finalized? If you’re just changing the resolution for more detail you could instead turn dynamesh off and subdivide like normal.

No reason besides ignorance. I’ve really only been using Zbrush4R5 for about 3 days, I have no idea of the finer points of workflow. It’s really easy to forget how much knowledge you accrue over time. I’ve been using Adobe Flash for about a decade now and I still help new artists with it.

Not knowing if such a thing is not possible, it’s easy to just expect things to work a certain intuitive way but be surprised if they don’t.
