Anime Material - Fire Mage (Toon)

Hello!

My first ZBC thread!

I was experimenting with the posterize effect to create a well-functioning Anime style material. I was fairly successful and thought I would post the result on the forums in case anyone else was interested

I’m new at rendering and materials in Zbrush and achieve most of it by trial and error. :stuck_out_tongue:

For each subtool I have a different version of the tweaked material to better match the polypaint on it. I tweak it with the Ambient and diffuse settings in the material modifiers.

The reason for this is that the posterize effect behaves differently depending on the polypaint underneath. The issues occur with very light as well as very dark colors that tend to get undesirable effects. This becomes especially difficult however if there are several different colors on the same subtool.
Here is an example of how the face material settings and polypaint looks:

I set the posterize level in the material to 2.
I also added filled outline. Experiment which line depth that works best for your project.

Some highlights that I wanted to always look the same in all angles I painted on using MRGB and a white bright MatCap. Example:

Great experiments! I’m always looking for new ways to get a cartoon look in ZB. Thanks!

Here comes the rest!

In addition the Material worked best if the meshes were highly divided, else there would be jagged edges in the posterize effect. I also recommend you to use a very sharp focal shift fall-off or else there may be some artifacts when the polypaint blends with any underlying color.

When rendering I used the preview render checked while initiating the BPR render.

This is not the best material, though can with some tweaking give good results  Hope it helps someone with their renders! Cheers!

Thanks for the info! I will try it out.

I seems to be having problems attaching the material zip though will try again here
Cheers!
