This arch and doorway are accurate representations of Eighth century Anglo-Saxon building ideals. Anglo-Saxon masons took some of their skill and inspiration from extant surviving Roman architecture in Britain as well as adding uniquely different elements, such as the sawtooth-patterned blocks. This style predates continental Romanesque styles seen in Europe in following centuries, and sometimes includes elements we’d call Celtic: key patterning and interlace designs found throughout Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Cornwall.
