Alpha Wrapping

I’m currently working on a project involving cursive writing. I’ve made tubes in Maya based on my curves from illustrator. Then I imported it into ZBrush. I’m trying to create a shoelace fibers effect on the cursive. Essentially simulating the text is made out of shoe laces. I’ve tried adjusting the alpha settings, but I’m having a hard time with the falloff, as well as having the sculpted details follow the curvature of the mesh. Is there a better way of doing this? Any insight is appreciated.

Did you create UVs when you made the object in Maya?
you need to create a tube UV and apply a tiling texture to displace or bump the texture from.
