alpha seems too blurry on certain places on the model

Hi guys,

I just downloaded the trail version of Zbrush and so I decided to learn it by doing one of the video tutorials. I love it!

I came to the point where I’m using an Alpha for making a type of skin, but for some reason the Alpha won’t work well on every place of the model.

Here’s a pic. You can see that it’s quite sharp on the left side of the model, but on top on his head and upper lip it’s just not!

Hope someone can help me out.

you have a less dense mesh at the head than on the tentacles so there isn’t as much geometry to push around, so you’ll get what you have there.

If you subD up another time or two and then add the alpha you should get a similar result.

Hi Beta channel,

Thanx! I was thinking of that too… Because I’m new to this software I don’t quite understand how to do that subD multiple times. I found a SubD slider in the menu, (see img)

And I put the slider up to 6, and that’s the max. Can you tell me how to do this multiple times?

Thanx again!

Subdividing is a very basic process. I would suggest for basic problems like this you consult the online info that Pixologic has, or check some youtube vids.

To subdivde all you need to do is press the divide button on the geometry screen. You can only divide up tothe number of poly’s your machine can handle. If you need to go above like 5 million polys per object, I would suggest learning how to use HD geometry.

Also if you hover over things with your mouse and hold cntrl, a menu will pop-up and give useful info on the thing you are hovering over.

You’re not actually using a real mesh yet. You’re currently viewing the adaptive skin preview and editing it (typically a bad thing).

You’ll want to head to the zclassroom and watch the videos on working with Zspheres so you know what an adaptive skin and unified skin are. You’ll also most likely want to consult the wiki.

For your current mesh you’ll want to go to tool.adaptiveSkin.createAdaptiveSkin

That will create a new mesh in your tool list that you’ll want to select (skin_toolName). With that you can go to tool.geometry and increase the number of subD levels you have with the divide button (ctrl+D).

Hope this helps.

Thanx guys!

This clears things up for me. I will try not ask such basic questions in the near future  I just couldn’t find the answer while I was watching all those lessen vids. Think I just missed it. Sorry…

Thanx again!
