Allosaurus visual

Just thought I would post some pre production z brush images of a proposed allosaurus statue. Z brush is wonderful. It allowed me to produce these “bronze” images at the bidding stage of the project.

I hope to be able to post some “real” clay pictures of the allosaurus very soon.

Thanks as aALLO1.jpg lways for everyone who contributes to the site.

Brilliant job! I just love that baggy skin on his neck, lovely details and proportions! :+1:

Very nice, but

A few critiques…

Head is a little thick, Allosaurs had quite thin skulls(it could just be because you have no perspective on your camera).

The hornlets above the eyes should be more pronounced too, this could be approached by reducing the size of the ones further down the snout.

He needs more teeth and they need to be smaller.

Of course, all these comments a negligable if you dont want to follow the fossil record.

actual fossil (a bit crushed)

Reproduction (sculpture)

  Nice detail though. :+1:

For your information, I am a fully qualified paleontologist and the allosaurus dimentions were based on scans of a cast of an allosaurus fragilus skull. I thank you for your critique but please do not assume or presume that you are the font of all knowledge when it comes to prehistoric creatures. The reconstructed skull photograph you posted shows a heavilly adapted form that has been doing the rounds for a number of years now. The general concensus is that each individual allosaurus specimin seems to have distinctively different brow forms dependant on its age.

nice try ministerart…BUT, i KNOW FOR A FACT that the allosaurus fragilus had hairy brows!!! and I CAN PROVE IT!!! plus, you got one extra horn that shouldn’t be there. you better get back to the drawing board. heheheh

just kiddin’…nice work. you going to texture it? do you know what color the scales were? let me know if you don’t.

[email protected], I had no intention of offending you in anyway. Nor am I out to say to the world “look at me, I know everything about dinosaurs!”.

I’m just posting what I see, and if you dont want anybody to critique your work then just say so.

Besides, fully qualified Paleontologist or not, Allosaurus still had more teeth than that.

hehehe

I did a 3d Allosaurus on here quite a while back, a full body one and I couldnt get the skin right, the way it hung and the face looked to hard for my liking in that i didnt have the skills or the zbrush version that is current. I done quite a bit of research and used artistic liscence quite a bit. Information illustration and art can be a difficult area, we only have to look at a few books once we know quite a lot about a subject and we see errors, or what we belive to be errors, where as on the other hand if we are creating a character or monster from our mind, well who is to say if it is right or wrong unless it specifically lends its anatomy from a known animal or a human. This is an excellent piece of modeling and a brilliant version of an Allosaurus. It is great to see as it helps me find fault in my own work and I like finding fault in the way of knowing what is wrong. It is frutrating when something you do doesnt look quite right but your not sure why. Keep up the good work and well done.

I like this a lot. Great forms! This is a very good interpretation! :+1: :+1:
