Alien Plant sculpture Updated... update

I made that texture by screwing with another from BioDesigner. (he makes amazing things!)
It occurred to me after seeing what Pixolicious posted that you might be having trouble
with giving your model color and materiel and stuff and not just rendering.

If that is the case I might be able to save you a lot of money and whip up another tutorial.
As I said about rendering I do not fully understand it, and the same applies to texturing
and painting stuff in ZBrush but understanding it is less important then being able to do
it, and that is something I can do.

I like making tutorials, making them helps me too and gives me new ideas about how to do things.

I have not tried to paint it. I would like a tutorial on how to make your own materials though. I have not really looked for those either. I am just not there yet. What I will eventually really really need  is a tutorial on how to make a realistic eye, but I have not really looked for those either

I only touched the paint once and it was before I started on an actual sculpture, you know when you just see what you can make out of a ball… it turned out okay. need more practice with it

updated sculpture. Now to add some textures and bugs

I lied apparently. Only bugs coming soon. Teach doesn’t want to see colors/textures on this one. I hope that means that after spring break he will be going over how to paint and make materials in depth.

Also the online documents do not get used nearly enough I think. Even though its broken up into little bites, pretty much anything you need is in them.

I’ve found that when I want to do something new, I can go to Online Docs after laying out a step by step of what I need to know and then printing each relevant item and putting them in order. That gives me a defacto tutorial.

There seems to be a step by step for most anything. Also a lot of folks miss the fact there are good items in the documents folder inside the ZBrush program folder.

That and of course the people here are the best on the Internet at helping out.

Almost forgot, I love the plant. :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Here is a turntable

WOW!!!
I think you have a good teacher, how long have you been doing 3D stuff?

Thanks! Jesse Sandifer is my teacher. He teaches locally in Dallas but he does online courses too. It is nice to have an industry professional critique and teach their techniques. http://www.cgnuggets.com/

http://www.chickwalker.com/ these are some of his works

I have little over 3 years of experience with Maya (check out my site if you want http://2to3d.net) and I have been working in Zbrush for a few weeks now. I have traditional painting and drawing skills but not very much sculpting. I must admit should have been using zbrush a long time ago, it is sooooo artist friendly, and super easy to use. I think it works well with my brain

I3ear, I recently completed a sculpt of Audrey II from the movie, Little Shop of Horrors, and I must apologize for not giving you credit for inspiring me to attempt it. I saw your posts here and immediately went to Zbrush and started sculpting forgetting in my old age what got me started sculpting that one in the first place. Sorry 'bout that, but I love the plant!

ahhhhh … alien plants… ahhhhh droooool… :D:D

will you be textureing this?

Have not been on in a while been busy with homework, sorry for the delayed response

Thank you Voodoodad! I checked out your gallery and think the Audrey II kicks a$$, nice work  I will go on the thread and comment soon. It is nice to hear that my plant inspired you to do such a cool piece. This plant started as a doodle of a geometric flower that my older sister did on her homework about 15 years ago. I actually have the evolution of this plant throughout the years. this is my first attempt to make it 3d.

Tyrellcorp- Thanks! I will be texturing this but it might have to wait until summer :stuck_out_tongue: As soon as it is textured I will add it to this thread. Checked out your gallery too. I like the textures and colors, my favorite was “inside a zsphere”, it looked very fleshy and the environment was cool.

Thank you everyone for the kind words!

okay so now I want to paint this monstrosity. Does anyone know how can I take this one big dynamesh and separate it into pieces that I can give different materials?

You don’t necessarily have to split it into separate subtools. You can mask and do mrgb fills or just material fills. In my experience that works pretty well, especially if you set your material blend radius up a little. Or you can do an autogroup on the whole thing, keep visible the parts you want to fill with whatever mats and repeat for each material. There’s probably a million different ways to accomplish this, but I’m thinking doing it by polygroups would be your best bet.

I tried to auto group but it crashes every time. I feel like I am doing something wrong. I have missed all of the lectures on the subject

So if I use masking is it possible to have different materials and colors on a single mesh? Also, can I save a mask selection?

Thank you for your help!

You can use different mats and colors on the same subtool. I mentioned doing it by masking but you can actually paint mats onto your mesh as well, although in my experience that always looks like crap. You can also mask an area and do a group by mask. You might try that and see if it crashes. I’ve had troulble with the polygrouping options myself, but it’s about 50/50 as to whether it crashes.

I did try that and it crashed too :frowning: I will test out the other options. Thank you!!

edit:
Masking it off seems to work best for this one. Thank you very much!

Thank you voodoodad for all of your help! Here are some stills, turntable will be posted when vimeo is done uploading.
