Alien Breed Assault Images

Hello Everyone,

Here are a few images I made for the Team 17 game, Alien Breed: Assault. The game looks even better than the first episode, ‘Impact’ and I’m proud to have been involved in making it.

All the 3D models were sculpted, coloured and rendered in ZBrush. I inked the comic pages almost completely in ZBrush, using a customised version of the Standard brush. The pencils were drawn by the concept artist, Jon Beeston.

I’ll upload images of the characters I sculpted for the next episode of Alien Breed, ‘Descent’ when it is published.

Thanks for looking; and thanks to Team 17 for letting me show you.

Compliments, Cool Jobs! :sunglasses: :+1:

Wait - what? You did a “traditional ink” over pencils using Zbrush? The mind bends.

a) How did you bring in the pictures - plane? Background image?
b) How did you get the resolution you wanted?
c) How did you export…
d) Did you use PaintStop or the traditional Zbrush interface?
d)And were there any nifty things inking in Zbrush allowed for that other
software doesn’t?

This looks like one hell of a project Rory. I want to read the comic! Yes I Know its for a Game. I like the Arachno Morph but I am very impressed with your ink job and the work of the concept artist Jon Beeston. 5 stars from me :+1:

wow!!! I love this. Very professional looking…

Hello Guys,

Thank you for your kind comments.

I had a blast doing the comic, precisely because I could do it in ZBrush. Anyone who has tried to draw a smooth line in Photoshop will appreciate how frustrating it can be to create line drawn art in PS. Doing it in ZBrush using the process Aurick taught me made it feel like I was freehand painting with spline curves; suddenly my hand could do no wrong!

Aurick explains how to set up the document for traditional comic illustration in this thread here:-

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=65374

Resolution is controlled by document size; and the image is saved out using the Export Image button, whilst in flat render mode. The spline-like quality of the line is controlled by adjusting the Mouse Average slider. Set Preferences/Tablet size sensitivity to 1 and colour sensitivity to 0 for the most expressive and rich black lines.

The bad news is that at present there is no way to use this set up in the current version of ZBrush. Preview Render transparency only works in ZBrush 3.1 and earlier. I have submitted a ticket and have been assured that Pixo staff are working on the problem. Meanwhile, long time users will be able to fire up their old ZB3.1 and have a play with this technique. All my line art illustrations in this thread were done using it:-

Thanks Ron for all your previous words of praise: much appreciated! Replying to one of your comments on that thread, yes I would love to do a children’s book in the future, when time and DIY is less pressing!

Cheers,

Rory

Here’s the brush I use.
