ai-3dsmax-zbrush

Hi all -

I have this problem - I made a vector file in illustrator - imported it to 3dsmax - extrude to give thickness - export as obj file - opened in zbrush - so that I can add details and overall shape etc.

Problem is that when I divide the model just squashes in on it self - I think it is to do with topology or it has no quads - so how can I achieve this method with out spending too much time outside zbrush as I want to get on with modelling?

I dont think i can shape it in zbrush from scratch as it is quite complex with curves etc.

Thanks for the help in advance -:+1:

hide everything but the “top” and “bottom” (hide the extrusion/height you added)

tool>geometry>crease

then invert so only the height is showing

tool>geometry>crease

That should get you what you’re looking for when you divide now.

hi

thanks for the reply - but i still do not understand and hence uploaded an image -

if you see figure A is the obj file from 3dsmax which was initialy a vector file - in figure C have divided it and it just encloses on it self - i guess it has bad topology - figure D I put crease on and smooth off but then i have to divide it alot to be able to add details but again it is following its bad topology - how do i sort this problem out?

Alpha grab doesnt do a particually good job as the mesh has to have a high poly count -

do I have to manually draw a poly box in 3dmax go over my original vector file to create this shape then bring into zbrush? that take quite while -

thanks for the help and apologies for any troubles

Ahh…you didn’t say you had to add details.

Yes, you have to built topology that will work with Zbrush.

You can try to make a unified mesh…but chances are that will give you a different kind of crappy topo. But it is worth a try.
