After upgrading to 2021.6 won't open due to missing DLL error

After using upgrader from 2021.5.1 to 2021.6 Zbrush would not open showing this message:

zbrush_error
Since I don’t think a DLL is really a program, I reinstalled the upgrade, this time downloading and running the Installer.exe from the Pixologic download page.

But the same message appeared. So I moved a newly downloaded copy of said DLL into the directory containing the Zbrush.exe as instructed in the readme, and it gave me a different message, a 0xc000007b error, which could mean I am using a 32bit DLL in a 64bit space or that I’m a Gemini with an inverted chakra, I dunno.

Point being, this is the first time I’ve encountered this following an upgrade during the 4 years I’ve been using Zbrush, and I’m wary of doing too much and stripping the threads off this pooch. Zbrush 2021.5.1 was open and running fine literally moments before the upgrade, so I’m puzzled about whether I should be so aggressive here.

Hi,

this is a Windows library which is missing.

Here you can find more information about this:
https://wikidll.com/microsoft/api-ms-win-shcore-scaling-l1-1-1-dll

Maybe this could help.

BTW: I did only google at ‘api-ms-win-shcore-scaling-l1-1-1.dll’

CU

I downloaded it, and it’s an executable, labeled as a repair-setup.exe, as opposed to the plain DLL that I already D/Led from another site. Is this a site that you have had any experience with, or is it the first thing that came up when Googling, as it was for me?

I guess I’m asking whether, if it were you, would you trust this executable?

I’m also wondering why nobody else has had this issue - am I the only ZB user still hanging onto Win7 Pro?

I have the same problem. I tried full 2021.6 installer and ZUpgrader. It’s time to upgrade Windows, I guess.

Are you using “Windows 7”?

Welcome to the community Michal. I am using Windows 7 Pro, But I wrote/edited that last line in a few minutes after the main statement, so maybe Michal didn’t read it - so I don’t know if that is his OS as well.

Yes, I’m still using Windows 7.

From Pixologic’s website:

Minimum System Requirements:

  • OS: 64-bit editions of Windows Vista or newer. (32-bit operating systems are no longer supported.)

Windows 7 isn’t supported by Microsoft, so I personally, would not use it. You still fall in line with support here since 7 was released post Vista, and it may be that some DLL may not have been packaged in this update. This CAN happen sometimes, but I don’t think this was intentionally done by Pixologic to force anyone to upgrade.

Still, as great as Win7 was, it is a security risk to use it moving forward and the odds of software install issues like this are more likely to occur as the support for the OS is dead.

Yes, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

Hi there and thank you for reporting the issue. anyway the Pixologic team is aware of that issue, it only happen for win7/8 users.
you can for now uninstall 2021.6 and reinstall the previous version if you still got the full installer.
stay tuned

hope it help !

Hi Everyone,

As @facelessmindz mentioned, this is an issue that affects users of Windows 8.0 or lower. Windows 8.1 or higher should not be affected. We are working on addressing this as quickly as possible.

Thanks for your patience!

I’m running windows 10 and It wont launch for me either. It acts like it is about to boot up but doesn’t do anything.

I’m having the very same issue, running Windows 7 Pro - 64…

Thank you, that means I can hold off on screwing up my PC for a while longer.

Knowing that this is being addressed allows me to be patient and consider whether to re-install that backup version of the free Win10 Pro upgrade from 4 years ago - now, at the start of this next major project…but there’s never a good time to do that, is there?

…and 2021.6.2 fixed the problem - roll credits on this thread.
