Advice on using layers please

Im sculpting onto a head model and I was after a few tips on using layers in a similar way to Photoshop

I would like to build the detail in layers to have more control over what I sculpt, starting with larger facial structures and working through to details like skin pores. Then be able to export each layer separately if I need to (if I want to generate a bump map from just skin pores layer for example) Ive had a few problems in the past with using brushes like 'smooth' and having it effect the other layers which kind of defeats the object of separating the details into layers in the first place.

Are the layers only functional at the subdivision level at which they were created?

Any tips or advice?

Layers are only functional at the level at which they were created.

You can create layers for multiple subdivision levels. To do this, you need to turn off the layer(s) at the current level before switching to a different level. You’ll then be able to create layers at that level and work with them. To work with the layers that you’d previously created, you’ll need to turn off the ones at the current level before switching to the other level.

Thanks Aurick!
