adding to a mask

all i want to do is hide an area of my mesh/tool, whatever, so I can work on another. I can’t select all of it in one go because of the form; I need to select/hide the bulk, then select again to add the remaining bits to the masked area . From tutorials I gather that in older versions you held down ctrl/shift and dragged a marquee; to add to that selection you did the same thing but then let go of shift…

it’s seems in v4 you don’t need to hold shift down at all, so how can i add to the selection? is there a simple marquee tool with new; add; subtract and intersect a la photoshop? or a way of hiding the area you’ve painted an alpha mask on?

Use ‘Ctrl+Shift’ and drag out a marquee. While you have the marquee, you can let go of ‘Ctrl+Shift’ and now press ‘Alt’ to turn the marquee red. This will hide anything that’s under the marquee. Also, after you have the marquee drawn out, you can let go of ‘Ctrl+Shift’ and press ‘Spacebar’ to move it or no keypress to re-scale it. Note: Re-scale will only work on the Rectangle and Circle marquee.

you can easily hide based on your masking by going into tool->masking->hide pt.
you could also hide a bit to much then invert whats hidden (ctrl shift click on the canvas i think) then chip away at the edge on where you missed the selection then invert it again and it should show that area along with the original parts so it is possible to refine your hidden parts with both showing and hiding more of it

Hi, thanks for the advice. Though i can’t find the ‘hide PT’ button in v4. ?? it’s not at the bottom of the tab as in earlier versions.

It’s under Tool->Visibility.

=S thanks. Why do they keep moving things about…

Why do I even bother! :rolleyes:

I’m sorry if I’ve offended you by not explicitly thanking you zber2. My thakyou in my first reply was kinda meant as a generic acknowledgement. tho to be honest, I still couldn’t get the masking to work in the way you described - I’ve since cracked it: I was pressing ctrl>mouse-click>then shift; so the green and red marquees weren’t appearing. So at the time your advice, helpful as I realise it now is, wasn’t helpful at the time, and I just blundered on into all the other problems anyone faces with new software and plain forgot about this thread.
I’ve got basic masking under control now, but plenty of other trouble. So expect to see more of me around here! :slight_smile:

oh, and thanks :slight_smile:
