So, I’m working on the my new trial download of Zbrush (previous experience in Softimage), and just finished my first Zsphere’s sculpt. I’m trying to use the adaptive skin feature to turn it into a polymesh for further modelling, but it’s grayed out. Is there something that needs to be selected before adaptive skin’s active? (It’s in the Shift A mode, showing the sketched Zspheres.) Then, if I try to do an adaptive skin with the sketched Zspheres hidden, Zbrush shuts down. Help! (Even in the first day, I’m finding that Zbrush has alot more going for it than Mudbox, and if I can get this working, it’s definitely my choice…) Thx!
Are you referring to ZSpheres or ZSketching? Could you post a screen grab?
Sure… Here’s the screen shot. (BTW: I’m working off a Macbook Pro.) And yes, that’s supposed to be a chicken…

Looks like your trying to get a Unified Skin and Adaptive Skin at the same time and that simply isn’t going to work the way you expect it to. Look at the picture below to get a better understanding of Adaptive Skin and Unified Skin.
Also, go to ZClassroom and watch Sketching with ZSpheres especially the last two video tutorials called Unified Skin and Adaptive Skin.
Am checking out the video’s now. One thing I am unclear about - is there a difference between Zspheres and a Zsphere Armature? Also, I tried making a unified skin out of the Zphere portion of my model - and it’s crashed every time. (I’m running Zbrush off a Macbook Pro…)
ZSpheres and ZSphere aramature are the same thing.
If you have ZSpheres drawn on the canvas, then pressing the A key will show you the Adaptive Skin. Pressing Shift+A will darken the ZSpheres and allow you to ZSketch on top of the ZSpheres. While in Shift+A mode, pressing the A key will show you the Unified Skin.
…thx for the advice! Used the unified skin option, after numerous tinkering with the smooth and polish options. Can’t get adaptive skin to work…the program crashes each time I try it. (I’ve only got out of the box memory in this machine - that may be the problem there.) But the unified skin seems to be quite enough for what I’m doing at this stage - so thanks!!
