I just got wind of another breakthrough from Ed Catmull and friends over at Disney. It is called Ptex. It lets you paint on 3D models without having to generate uv maps for the character. It generates individual maps for each polygon and then stores all the information in one file. You just paint and then render. Not sure of all the specifics but it is open source.
