Absa cape epic rock and treeman "dxf"

Hi All, I wanted to post a job I just completed for the ABSA Cape Epic Cycle Challenge, known for being one of the toughest cycle challenges in the world, The 2017 route will take riders through 691 km of Western Cape countryside and up a lot of hills over 8 days, the accumulated vertical gain over the eight days will be 15 400m.

The original idea was to create some natural creatures out of the terrain that pushes the limits of the cyclists… which changed to the terrain helping the riders along their Journey. original concept for this job was by Dana Cullinan
the job was going to be used in TV and Print

The final print AD (Rockman)

This was the concept sketch for the print ad (Rock Creature)

Once working out what software and approach we were going to take, we started a base mesh with ZSphere’s

Building in main rock forms using Dynamesh, pushing and pulling shapes to find something cool

Working over a period of days, adding details and using multiple brushes, thanks to jonas ronnegard for he’s amazing rick brushes

After sculpting creature for a couple of days it was time to tackle the landscape, we tried a couple of landscape software’s and finally
settled on World Machine

This system is amazing for landscapes and detailing that’s needed for Hi-res Print work

This was the original landscape shot that was used for the job

slowly coming together with creature and landscape details in zbrush

Next was to start texturing and doing some render tests, time to start testing different rendering systems to find the best system for the detail that we needed and to hit the deadline we had, keep in mind this job is going to be printed to about 5 stories high, so that alone was a task on it’s own.

First little test we started but still looking way to fake for real rocks… and finally we found RedShift…

This was our first render tests in RedShift, very happy with speed and quality at this stage,

still lots to do but heading in a great direction now, next is to get the models shot for the ad
thanks to my good buddy Richard Cook for the awesome images we managed to get shot in studio and on location

After a full day of shooting we managed to nail what we wanted and boy was it tricky, always seems so much easier in your brain until you hit road blocks, but we push through and managed to get it done

The POV shot, we though would just work out over the models shoulder with a wide angle lens, we were wrong, so we shot and couple of angles and comped the pieces together.

After rendering all elements of rockman creature it was time to comp into scene

slowly building up layers of detail, airbrushing, creating rocks in maya, clouds bushes etc…

Finally client made changes and more changes… this is the final rendered file send off to get printed

just some details we managed to capture in the illustration
was so much fun to be a part of this challenging job and loved every
second of the 4 months creating these ad’s and animation’s

sorry for the poor quality, just an image of the final printed artwork at the Cape Town Airport,
(now that’s a monster print)

Job Still not over, next was the Tree Creature and a whole new set of challenges and problems…

stay tuned for the next part

Cheers
