About Wacom

Hey there,

I’m fairly new to Zbrush but I want to really get deep into it and now I’m about to buy a Wacom tablet, it is going to be an Intous 4 but I was wondering wether to buy the A3 size or a smaller one, what do you think, is an A4 enough for Zbrush or should I go for the A3 ?

Thanks in advance

The “not so helpful” answer is as big as you’re comfortable with and no bigger. When I worked with tablets, I used one about 30cm by 22cm (9x12 inches) usable area, but I almost exclusively use Cintiq’s now. I really like having a Wacom 12wx in my lap for casual work and use a CIntiq 21ux for more precision work.

Keep in mind your available desktop space. The A4 model needs the space.

It somewhat depends on your “arm style”. If you tend to like to make long, sweeping strokes with the whole arm, go larger. If you tend to draw/sculpt more from the wrist, smaller might be OK.

I have also worked (cramped) with a little portable model that was 6" x 8" (15xm x 20cm) that I carried in my laptop bag.

I have had two Wacom Intuos tablets. I used to have the Intuos 3, 9 x 12. I likeed it, however I had my complaints. Moslty because of the size of the tablet. I upgraded to an Intuious 4, I am using the Medium size which is 8.8" x 5.5". To me, this is a perfect size. I can put into my bag to take and work at school, I have a laptop, and it works perfect with my desk size and my laptop. The new Intuos has the Amidextrous ability so if you are Left handed the buttons and the LEDs switch for your settings Overall the button setup and the wheel on the side is great, I no longer hit them with my palms. If I were you, and you are highly serious about using your tablet, and about zbrushing, I recommend spending the money and getting the Intuous 4 Medium (8.8" x 5.5") If your not to sure about what you want to do, or not to serious about sculpting or using the tablet as much, go with a little cheaper or smaller version. But thats my recommendations. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the replies sofar,

yes, I’m serious about advancing in the skulpting with Zbrush and other applications, and at the moment I dont have money issues so I am pretty ready to pay. My desk is also big enough for any tablet. It is really only a question wether I can use the potential size of A3 or if a smaller one is already enought, because if i have to judge by the space I need with my normal computer mouse I have to say that I use like 8x8cm space … but I guess it is diffrent when drawing with a tablet …

It is very different when using a tablet. The thing I like about the Wacoms is that you can customize your buttons, so you can have one button for ‘Display’. Wen you set that, you click it and your tablet goes to just one monitor, you click it again and it goes to the other monitor, click it again and it goes back to both monitors. You can also set on your tablet the screen size, so you can only use a certain part of your tablet. Another thing that I like about the new Intuos4, is that the USB cable detaches, so that you can pack it away and not have to worry about your cable getting bend or screwed up on the end that goes into your tablet.

i bought intus 4 medium, and this is my first tablet, and ive got to say its way too big, i had to limit the active size of the screen and make it over 4x smaller, i ddint use much space when using a mouse, the same stayed true when using the tablet ;/ Especially with the crappy zbrush interface where you have to move the pen all around teh screen to do anything.
I use like 4cmx4cm of space when using my mouse, and i never move my wrist from a place, just move the mouse with my fingers, so doing big moves with the pen isnt for me,it all depends on how long your strokes are ;]

Well then I guess I will go for the A4 size, going to save ~ 200 euro

I work for a company who distributes Wacom Products in Aus. At present i have an Intuos 3 6x11 which i am very happy with. It was the only Intuos 3 with the widescreen ratio. As you would have noticed, all the Intuos 4 products now follow a similar ratio.

As for which Intuos 4 to get? Go for the medium. From experience, its a very nice size. If you went for the small it feels WAY to small. Going for the small also means that you only get 6 express keys instead of 8 and you also miss out on the illuminated displays. Which are fantastic, they’ll tell you (application specific) what your short cut has been set to.

Also, perfect for the left handed people out there. You can flip the tablet and set the OLED screens to follow suit.

If you’re in Aus, i can let you know what resellers have a demo Intuos 4 you can play with yourself.

Brilliant product.

I agree with jeljones. Go with the Intuos 4 medium, it is a perfect size. I have dual monitors, and it works perfect for both of them.

Haha. I was going to say just the opposite. I’ve been using Intuos 2 and 3 at 6x8 and 6x11 for YEARS and only recently upgraded in size to the Large Intuos 4. IMO there’s no comparison in terms of detail work for both sculpting and painting/drawing.

Whatever you get just make sure you lock the proportions to the screen you’re working on. I see so many people frustrated with tablet results when they don’t have matching ratios. A circle should be a circle, no?

I ordered the Intous4 L size, should arive tomorrow. As soon as I got it set up and runing, I’ll report my first impressions

Hey there, I recieved the tablet and set it up. I’m simply amazed by what I can do now, I’m still speechless. But … there are a few things bugging me.

  1. Is the tablet working reversly with Zbrush? I needed to check Zsub to actually add z like with the mouse.

  2. The bottom 4 buttons are for Shift, Ctrl, Alt, and Drag. Neither is Alt working to reverse the current brush, nor is Ctrl working for masking … ?

  3. How can I manualy rebound my buttons ?

Thanks in advance

Fixed the first two points by myself, about the rebounding, when I go to the Wacom Interface I can change the function of any button, it lets me choose " Application Defined ". Ok, but how can I bound Ctrl+Z for example on it ?

the same way you assign any other key, you just hit both

go to your wacom settings and choose the button you want to reassign, if you want ctrl+z for example you just need to go to keystrokes and press both keys

im a big fan of the wacom bamboo btw :stuck_out_tongue: small and tiny (A5) but oh so lovely… and bloody cheap :P, great for travelling too
i can also state that the wacom service is truly outstanding… once i lost my pen and the pen holder they just sent me a new one free of any charge
