A question about hd pollys

Hi all i am trying to push the detail on a couple of my tools, they all have about 3-4 divisions and have a max polly count of 200,000.
So ive divided them in hd and all is fine and i can edit them in hd and all that, but if ive pushed it past 33 million pollys it will not save at all it just crashes.
Ive tried to save them in the lowest subdivision in normal and in hd but to no effect they just will not save.
On the system that i am using it has 16gb of memory and if i push a model up to 40-50 million pollys without using hd pollys and try to save in whatever subdivision i like its fine save every time. however i cant make normal maps or anything like that as it runs out of memory, and i need to as everything is for use in maya.
Can anybody please suggest a solution or workaround for this, or tell me if this is some sort of bug or limit that im not aware of.

Well at the moment i have it set at:
compact mem at 4096
doc undo 4
tool undo 4
max pollys per mesh 40 million
hd preview max polly 10.92 (was told that its best to leave this where it is so i have)

Is your system 64 bit? If it isn’t then I’d advise you to lower the compact mem setting to 2048. I think I’d also try lowering the max polys per mesh to 21.

Yes the system is 64 bit, but i have tried these anyway and they did the job saved a cube with 230 million hd pollys no problems what so ever. so thank u for the suggestion very much appreciated.
