A punk character for a demo reel

Hi, i don’t know why i never thought of posting my work here before, but oh well. This is my punk character i making for my demo reel (i know he doesn’t look like one, but he is. really. ). He is the last guy on it, and, if you like, you could see part of his creation history on cgtalk:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=43&t=489762&page=1&pp=15

I will be updating this thread as i texture, set up shaders and get him ready for rendering.

So far, the modeling stage is at an end, with only some minor tweaks that i might do. The hands are somewhat rough, but i think i ll separate them for close ups and refine them then.

hands are very well done any special technique u used?

I used pretty much all the default alpha brushes that come with zbrush, except for one that i took of an elephant skin (but that was just a denser version of vertical lines).

To get really dense fine lines in hands i used a slightly denser and slightly finer version of brush58 alpha with a freehand stroke. Blurred it a bit in the options, as well as set radial fade to about 18-20. Then it’s just painting them, not even in projection master.

Same for all the other types of cracks and wrinkles. I got tension folds by the thumb by blurring brush 58/57 quite a bit and then dragging/dropping them next to each other for example.

Blurring and radial fade are the key, really. You could use just the few brushes and achieve almost any type of effect.

very very cool… if ur not too busy do u think u could make a small tutorial with the steps u took? i understand changing brushes and such and blurring… but actually seeing how another person works and their methodology is really cool to see… no worries if ur too busy though!

thanks!

Yeah, sure, i guess i could do that, although it would have to be in a couple of weeks when i m done with this character and the rest of the demo reel.

Here’s another update:

Here’s him textured. There are still a few things i m thinking of tweaking in both colour and model, but for the sake of time i m going to move on to his hair next and then tweak everything as i set up the shaders and do test renders.

very nice modelling very realistic the skin though is a bit too loose especially on the elbow and between the pecs for a young chraracter like this one just my
2 cents

def… great job man… only thing i would say is that he looks a lil orange? maybe lighten the tone a bit?

otherwise amazing!

super cool!!
great job man…

I agree. Does look fantastic so far though.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

MoreHuhn and Bryan Silva: - Thanks guys! Yeah, you are totally right. When i was making him i was planning to make him older, though I textured him using same reference that i used for the young version (i dunno, seemed like a good idea at the time). I ll try to get some sort of compromise by tuning down the folds and adjusting the texture.

Zanrok - thanks man, yeah I exaggerated the skin a bit in case it fades too much when I apply subsurface scattering. I do think that making him paler would help make him look older too.

what PC specs are your running? Nice work by the way.

Yes, sir. Great modeling, and very good texturing, subscribing to this interesting thread. Hope to see your updats soon.

All the best

Victor Marin

Zeke3d - thanks, my specs are: x6800 core2duo extreme ed. 2.93Ghz., 4 gigs of ram (of which only 3.25 works), A single 7900gtx video card, Xp 32 bit. (why?)

ilusiondigital - thanks man!

Another update - sorry for not replying soon, i have to get this work finished as soon as possible - so I was crunching away.

I have more or less set up the character. I’m using mid\high level zbrush2/3 exports of geom and bump/normal maps to compensate for the missing detail. These here are maya viewport grabs, so not the highest level of detail is displayed.

Pants, shirt and a small pouch on the back were done while i was back in school in zbrush2. Pant’s are 1 level away from highest, torso and the box (which is brand new! ) are 2 levels from highest. Belt and minor jewelry items are done in maya and are at their highest level of detail.

There are some untextured items still, which i would texture in zbrush, in bulk. Hair is done in alphas, since it’s the quickest way to render hair for animation, plus i need to show that i can do hair for games in the demo reel (also because i couldn’t get good results through paint fx or hair sims quickly). Hair is handpainted (just like the rest of the textures), with just a few minor strands overlayed on top that i got from rendering paint fx.

Next step would be to shade and light him, plus do bunch of tweaks for textures and, generally prepare this for rendering.

Thanks for your interest and please post crits and comments!

P.s. - i’m not sure if it’s ok to post stuff as it’s getting prepared for rendering in maya on zbrush forums…but if it’s not i ll just post link to final animation later.

Very cool update man. I love where its headed. Love the head and hair treatment.

Thats a damn good job you did here… :+1: Waiting for more !

Thanks guys!

Another update: - here’s the shader/lighting test for the torso. It’s not quite there imo, but i m out of time, so this would have to be the final version for now. I m going to tweak lighting a little bit and add a back light to cut him out of the background (which is nothing right now, but i d probably end up with a simple tone later).

I will definetely continue improving the shader/texture and working on the hair, so please let me know what you think and how to improve on him!

Hi, a quick update:

I changed the lighting, tweaked the face a bit and worked on overall shading.
