This is a Black Dragon model I made a few months ago in max9. It’s based off of the D&D illustrations by Lockwood. I have included the base ztl file so everyone can play with their new Black Dragon pet…Have fun!

What a cool model
thanks for the file too
Extremely generous, Escape. Thank you very much.
Thanks a lot. Very generous of you.

Wow, really dig the initial sculpt and the ZTL donation. Very nice of you
I did a version on Lockwood’s blue dragon a year or so ago as a ZBrush exercise and I was really astounded at how he’s got each species just nailed down. Every angle, every illustration, they’re just dead-on anatomy and personality-wise. I changed mine to brownish because I could never get a blue sheen looking natural under HDRI lighting.
I’d recommend checking out the Draconomicon (I think that’s what it’s called) the next time you’re in a game shop. It has a lot of alternate versions of each species that I haven’t seen in general release books or google searches.
Cheers,
T

Thanks!
Thank you for your kindness really nice model indeed.
awesome job, what is the poly count on it?
Thank you for the very nice compliments everyone.
I was just testing out Z3 with this model and seeing how far I could take it…Z3 and the Zcommunity is amazing to say the least, I just wanted to give a little something back.
Tharrell- Yup Lockwood is awesome. I’ll definately have to check it out at the store, I just looked at it online. Very nice Blue Dragon you have there, Have you checked him out in Z3 yet?
Bryancrump- The base model has 9,658 polys. The half done picture with no teeth  has around 2.5 mill polys at subD 4. I have taken the model into HD Geometry at over 600 mill, but I was just messing around with it.
Hopefully someone is kind enough to get this dragon some dentures.
Have fun with him,
Escape
Thanks for the awesome dragon.Very cool!
Been working on my Godzilla series in Z3, and I’ve been really impressed with a lot of the new stuff, and really annoyed at some of the omissions. Not gonna derail your thread going into all that, though
I’m curious if you’re going to extrude the teeth, etc from the base model or if you’re going to use the geometry insert thingy as subtools? I’m also really curious how you got the filesize of the ZTL so tiny for as many polys as you’re talking about?!?
Cheers,
–T
Tharrell,
Honestly, I haven’t really thought about how I’m going to do the teeth. I’ll probably try both ways and see what way gives the best result as I’m still exploring Z3.
As for the file size it seems to be some Zmagic going on. The base OBJ file from Max is 2.03 mb with 9,658 polys, and the same base mesh ZTL is only 352 kb…a very nice code optimization there

Thanks for the model. This’ll be fun to play around with.
Restrictions…?
Foleypro,
No restrictions, use the model as you wish. All that I ask is that if you use the model for something other than personal use, please credit me as it’s creator. Other than that have some fun with it and post some images with what you have done.
Thanks,
Escape
Awesome! Thanks, Escape!
Very cool! Thanks!

Of course you would get all of the credit for the original mesh,I want to do many morphs and maybe some skins and such…
Thanks a Ton…
yes, yes its the draconomicon… i own it!! heheh…
nice blue, by the way, though it looks like its only a wyrmling. the black looks like the head is too big for the body.
Hey Escape,
I work for the artist Steve Argyle at http://www.steveargyle.com/. He does art for Dungeons and Dragons, and one of his upcoming projects could use a 3D model of a black dragon. If you could message me with your email, I’d like to contact you with further details.
