64 bit OS?

I’ve seen no mention of whether to use 64-bit windows vs 32-bit windows.

Or should I use windows 7?

My instinct tells me I should use windows XP, possibly 64-bit, but I don’t know if zbrush works in the environment or not. I tried the first release of mudbox on XP 64-bit and it was not a happy experience.

I tried zbrush 3.5 on XP 32-bit, AMD Athlon 64 dual core, 3GB RAM, and zbrush coughed up a hairball when I tried to subdivide the zbrush bust model up to 14m polys.

I’ve been rather unimpressed with the organization and thoroughness of the FAQ’s, so I’m posting here. Move the thread wherever you think it should go, just please tell me what system I need to buy so I can create professional level work.

Zbrush is best run on 64bit windows with 6 or more gigs of RAM.

It is a 32bit application, but can take advantage of up to 4gigs (the normal limit is 2 in 32bit environments). You want 6 or more so there is some left over for your OS, the more the better if you plan to have other apps running (photoshop, maya, etc).

I have the best results with win7 and 8 or more gigs (running 16, but for Zbrush alone it’s not necessary). I have had no problems with XP64 however, I used that for quite some time, and we still use it at work. Vista… I have no idea. I avoided that OS. In my advice it should be XP64 or win7-64. There is no reason to use 32bit operating systems anymore.

If Zbrush has access to a full 4gigs by itself, you should have no problem getting into 25 million or so polys before having to use HD geo for more.

Best of luck.

Thank you! This is very helpful!
