3ds Max can't import .obj with Polypaint?

Hello, I occasionally reading the boards but I never registered because usually I find the solutions for my problems.
That was the case until now. I can’t seem to find a single answer. So to the point:

I sculpted a model directly in Zbrush, then polypainted. When I export with polypaint and then Import it in 3ds max, the polypaint information doesn’t exist. If, however, I import the same .obj in Topogun, the polypaint is applied to the model.

So is It my fault, or 3ds max can’t “read” that kind of information?

P.S1: I export the object with the “Colorize” button on.
P.S2: When I import in 3ds Max, I choose the preset to “Zbrush” with the default settings.
P.S3: I managed to bake the polypaint information using xNormal by “ignore per vertex color” but I’m kind of curious to know what’s happening with 3ds MAX

Max doesn’t read it.

i don’t use 3dmax so i don’t actually know for sure, but try using GoZ to export to max, the polypaint will likely be sent with the object.

Zeddie I’ve already tried it with the same result.

So my assumptions are confirmed. Not big deal. I can bake the map in xNormal. That was me being curious.

Anyways, thank you both for your replies.

The polypaint data that ZBrush exports in an OBJ is a custom tag, not part of the OBJ specification. Only programs that have specifically implemented it can read it (such as XNormal and Marmoset Toolbag).

Hey Marcus,***8203;I allways wonder why Zbrush can write OBJ with polypaint but can´t read them??
Maybe there is something i missed?

This is why creating UVs and textures from your polypaint are necessary

No, it doesn’t work, and I’ve no idea why!

P.S. If you want to import/export polypaint then you can use the STL format through the 3D Print Exporter plugin.

It´s really extrange that we can´t check the polypaint or save it for later usage on the OBJ.
The problem when exporting in STL is that the mesh gets triangulated and looses the UV mapping.
VMRL would be better solution as it keeps the UVs but we don´t have any way to load WRL in Zbrush.

Would be great to improve this little things :+1:

Well, if you just want to export and import from ZBrush then you can use the GoZ format - just click Tool>Export and select GoZ Complete Binary from the drop-down.

Thank you Marcus!! That did the job perfectly :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

I love this forum because i do allways learn new hide things

Still would be a nice feature to read OBJ polypaint
