Is there a way to create a shortcut to activate/deactivate rec mode? Driving me nuts to press that manually every time I switch a layer.

You can do it with zscripting. Here’s a little plugin.
Unzip and put the ToggleRecord.zsc in the ZBrush 4R7\ZStartup\ZPlugs64 folder. Restart ZBrush and you will have a new Toggle Record sub-palette in the Zplugin palette.
Assign a hotkey to the Toggle Record button. The switch is for whether you want the layer left on or off when recording is turned off.
