3 Questions (Running out of Geometry!, ZBrush and Pixols!, Removing Artifacts!)

3 Questions

1. Running out of Geometry
So I understand the best way to create a model is to preplan and create all of the low poly assets in a 3D application, then import them as Subtools,

“But”

what happens when you start a head and realize you like where it’s going but you haven’t created the body for it and you have run out of geometry? I am using Blender so I don’t have GoZ or else I would probably just go to the lowest sud-d level and then add the geometry in Blender then reimport.

This is where using “voxols” like 3D Coat employs would come in real handy as you can just keep adding spheres or cubes to the head and build the body. What do other people do when they want to add a body to a head in ZBrush?

2. ZBrush and voxols
Do you think ZBrush will ever get voxols and does Sculptris use voxols?

3. Removing Artifacts
How do I remove these artifacts? (left over from extruding an alpha mask)

Do you think ZBrush will ever get Pixols and does Sculptris use Pixols?
Zbrush does use pixols, i assume you mean voxels for 3DCoat. I believe Sculptris uses neither.

Yeah, Thanks Richard. I meant Voxols.

re: Removing artifacts.

Just use one of the Selection brushes to hide them, then click on DelHidden in the Geometry sub menu.

Thanks Zber. Ok, when I select "(Shift + CTRL) and select the artifacts, the cap disappears or is hidden and the artifacts remain. What am I doing wrong?

Also, anyone care to take a stab at questions #1 and #2.

Box or lasso select the cap and leave it green, the artifacts will be hidden and the cap will remain.
Select the artifacts, press alt, in addition to the ctrl & shift, turning the selection area from green to red, and again, the artifactes will hide the cap will remain visible.
Box select either with ctrl-shift and then left click on what is not hidden and the hidden will reverse. Revealed cap will hide and artifacts will show or vice-versa.
In any of the above instances get it to where the cap is revealed and the artifacts are hidden and then, as zber2 said, delete the hidden from the geometry pallet with the ‘DelHidden’ button. By the way, the other control you need to be aware of is when you have things hidden and want to expose everything again, left click anywhere on the canvas except on the subject object, all hidden parts will become visibel again.

Actually in your 1st post you did ask correctly if Zbrush would ever get voxels.

As far a adding to your model, in Zbrush each subtool can be quite high in polygons, about 4 million, if I’m not mistaken. But you can keep adding things as seperate subtools as much as you care too, limited only by your hardwares capacity to handle the load. If you want to add a body to a head, as an example, you can use ‘merge’ in the subtool pallet. There is a Bolean process that can be used also in the subtool pallet. That’s a little lenthy to explain here. After merging or using Bolean you can ‘Remesh’ if you care to but be aware of the small axis indicators at the top right of the ‘Remesh All’ button in the subtool pallet.

How to use SelectRect brush

  1. While holding down Ctrl+Shift, click on Brush icon and select the “SelectRect” brush.
  2. While holding down Ctrl+Shift, draw the green mask.
  3. With your LMB still down, you can let go of Ctrl+Shift. Move your mouse to re-scale the rectangle or hold down Spacebar to move it or hold down Alt to turn the mask red. (when the mask is red, anything under it will be hidden)

How to use SelectLasso brush

  1. While holding down Ctrl+Shift, click on Brush icon and select the “SelectLasso” brush.
  2. While holding down Ctrl+Shift, draw the green mask.
  3. With your LMB still down, you can let go of Ctrl+Shift. Hold down Spacebar to move it or hold down Alt to turn the mask red. (when the mask is red, anything under it will be hidden)

Thanks Ezra, very helpful explanation. zber was correct only I wasn’t using the “Alt” button to reverse the selection.

BTW, once I hid something I clicked the LMB to reveal it and it didn’t reveal the hidden objects. I must have done something wrong or is there a different button for mac? Thanks

Hold down Ctrl+Shift and click on empty part of canvas to unhide everything.

@ zber2

Thanks you are absolutely right about the problem. Your solution works well too. I did find out with a little experimenting that once I press the alt key and the selected area turns from green to red all I have to do is raise the stylus from the tablet and the action happen which made the work flow smoother and faster. Thanks for your help, greatly appreciated!
