3.5R3 topology crashes

I’m using ZB23.5R3 Vista32 4Gb RAM

Three times now R3 has crashed on during simple topology edits.

There’s no obvious cause for the crash. I’m just building a mesh in the usual
way, and suddenly - crash.

The last time I lost an hours work. I’d have lost a lot more, but I know
to save often with ZB (Why is ZB the only 3D app’ I have to remember to
do that with?)

Attempting to take a crash dump with a debugger on the last crash didn’t
work. I’ll try again next time. You can be sure there will be one.

Hello Zbrush people
I have a similar problem, its probably related to the same issue within Zbrush.
Just a small topology edit in external 3D software and import back into Zbrush(using OBJ/GoZ/MA) makes Zbrush crash with that “good” old “don’t send” message :frowning:

That problem is the only real problem I have so far with Zbrush 3.5R3, and if somebody could help us that would be revolutionary, I could finally efficiently and quickly edit my Topology exactly the way I wanted and still keep my subdivision details when I import it back into Zbrush.
Any help would be very appreciated.

Hey Grey32! I managed to figure out what was(probably our mutual) problem.

LAYERS! for some reason when changing topology(at least the way I do it - by exporting obj file, editing it in my main 3D application and importing it back) while having layers on your model always crashes the Zbrush.
So if you had some layers try removing them all and then see if it works.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion HystericKeyframe but if you mean layers inside
ZBrush, I’ve never yet used 'em.

I’m just about to start another topo’ task (giving a head sculpt a body).
I’ll be sure to track my progress most carefully (and I’ve installed a debugger
in case it crashes again!).

ZBrush Edit Topology crashes often for me.

it probably crashes 6 or 7 times in a 24 hour period.

im not tracing over a hi res mesh. but its multiple SubTools combined as one item, which then is composed of multiple Polygroups… maybe that has something to do with it.

:frowning:

it doesn’t give me a crash report option, just ZBrush hangs and Windows 7 tells me it’s stopped working, and it’s just… done…

At what point does the crash happen? For example are you fine until you turn on the preview? If so, are you also projecting from the source model? And if so, are you remembering to set Tool>SubTool>PABlur to 8 (or a factor thereof)?

hi aurick

thank you for your reply!!!

i believe it crashes when i’m in Adaptive Skin > Preview, and Projection is turned on. I go there from Edit Topology. All of the settings are default, and it’s all under the Tool menu.

I am not using the ProjectAll option under SubTool, because it is greyed out. I learned this retopology techniques/ workflow from Eat3D ZBrush DVD (which is awesome btw).

I should report that my last retopo’ session went without a hitch. That did
not, of course, stop me from ‘saving often’

Whatever the problem is (assuming it ‘is’ only a single issue), it doesn’t
seem to be particularly consistent or reproducible.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with imported meshes though. At least one
of the crashes I saw was building new topo’ on a mesh that had never left
ZBrush (a ZSphere mesh).

The only other problem I’ve noticed is that hiding part of the ‘rig’ mesh can
be a little dangerous. At least twice now, I’ve found that I’ve been unable
to ‘unhide’ the hidden part of the mesh when I’m done working on that area

  • it’s lost for good. I usually have to revert to an earlier save. I have
no idea if this is related.

Can’t really help on what I’ve been doing when it crashed either. As far
as I remember, I’m just adding topo’ with Ctrl-click, click, etc.

If I catch one, and get a dump, I’ll be sure to send it to support.

hey, i’ve just crashed 4 times in the last 7 seven mintues rebuilding a mesh.

  1. import ztool
  2. ‘edit’
  3. topology -> turn on edit topology -> delete existing mesh
  4. contrl click off the model
  5. start drawing new mesh

it’s happened everytime after doing an “alt click” point removal on a stray vert (but not always after the same amount of time or in the same drawing order)

but, i did about 2hrs of retop last night without incident.

scoonie.

/how do i get a crash dump?
