3.5 exporting issues

Hello I am having a weird problem that I am sure has a simple solution:
I create normal and displacement maps for my object. When I export a .ma file and open it in maya I have to build the shader and put in the disp and normal.

The displacement map works great but the normal doesn’t. It makes my geometry turn flat black. When I create a new scene and I attach the normal map it works ok. What should I do?

Are your normals facing outward? I get this problem when they are inward.

the normals are ok. Thing is: If I create a sphere and apply the normal map to it, I would get the same result. That leads me to believe that the problem is in the scene, not in the geometry or in the map.

i guess you ve probably fixed this by now… but if you were using XSI i would say you need to apply tangents to the mesh. Not sure how it works in maya ( auto or manual ) but if i dont do that i get the same thing…
