3.12b -> Maya questions

Hi, what are the optimal displacement settings with the new version 3.12B when I have to use the Displacement map in Maya?

And how would I go about setting the Approximations settings in Maya to use this map?

I have been struggling a bit with it, and haven’t been able to get a good result.
The same model have been sculpted in Mudbox for mac, and exported and displacement is perfect all the time.

any help is appreciated

From my limited experience:
In ZBrush

Adaptive
Flip V
3 Channels
32 bit
Mid 0 (with this I don’t have to monkey around with alpha gain)

If the model size is vastly different I change the scale.

In Maya
For Approximation:

I usually start with the same as Mud
Spatial/Default Subs, and length of .1

I think Pixologic did a great job on this, I can even use ZBrush PUVs and get no seams.

That is the same settings I have found to be the best (tested 200 times yesterday after posting).
Can you explain what the scale do? And do you have some kind of rule of thumb for setting this scale ?

200 times! Must have been a fun day.

I’m less diligent, also I don’t have much time now, but the short answer is that if using a model in Maya scaled to half the size of the ZBrush model, I use .5 for scale, if its 1/4 the size I use .25, etc. It seems like an alternative to using alpha gain.

I did a quick test comparing output with a similar file from Mudbox. Using the Mudbox file in Maya which was scaled 1/10th of the size I found using an alpha gain of .1 worked pretty well as there is no scale option in Mudbox.

I hope this helps, but let me know if you find out otherwise. It’s pretty much trial and error for me and have only done limited tests.

200 = just a tiny bit exaggerated :stuck_out_tongue:
